I recently added the Shrockworks front bumper to my 2016 4Runner TRD Pro. Overall I’m very happy how it turned out but I wasn’t completely satisfied how the grill looked so I decided to make a grill for it. I searched the forum but didn’t find much info so I thought I would share what I did.
Here is the before picture.
The one thing that kind of bugged me was that the original grill was used for the top portion of the grill but the rest of it was left with nothing. As many of you know this is because the funky way Toyota made the grill. It seem the top part of the grill serves as part of the support structure for the upper grill frame. Which is extremely annoying. It severely limits your ability to customize your grill. I wish they would have made the upper frame self supporting.
Further more the unique shape of the Shrockworks front grill area did not allow me to use other custom grills that are already out there. I think Shrockworks could have made a little more effort to create a custom support frame that would allow you remove the upper grill and support the upper frame for a cleaner look but decided with the easier option.
So I started off by buying a flat hex mesh grill from customcargrills.com - Custom Car and Truck Grills - Mesh Grill Sheets and More. I then made a cardboard template for the area I wanted to cover and used that to cut the grill. Once that was done I painted it with a matte black plastic-dip. Then I wrapped the edge with a rubber trim piece that also came from Custom Car Grills.
Once that was done I wanted the Shrockworks grill bar to be painted matte black to match the screen but painting or powder coating but it would have been a lot of work to tape off and even more effort to powder coat which means I would have to remove it. In hind sight I should have done it before I put the bumper on. So instead I used a matte black vinyl wrap that was easy to put on and looks very nice.
The next step was finding a way to secure the screen to the grill bar. Originally I was going to use bolts but I wanted something more decorative. So I found these.
One minor problem was the screen holes were .45 inch and the back of the star bolts were .50 inch so I had to file the back side of the star down so it would fit. I also added a washer behind the star to better distribute the pressure.
The next challenge was to find a way to secure it on the back side. The gap between the top and bottom grill bar is about a 1-3/4 so I couldn’t use a large washer to hold the back side. I went to Home Depot and found a 3x3 inch T-bracket. I flipped it upside down and stuck it behind the grill bar. And as luck should have it, it fit perfectly and the hole lined up exactly where I needed it to be. So no modification was needed. All I had to do was paint it black.
Once I had all the pieces on I secured the screen to the grill bar. I added washer on the back side too for extra strength. So here is the end result.
