I guess I have kind of been corrected, neither has crash test/air bag compliance. As a mechanical engineer who has done some work involving shock isolation (granted I've only done this for almost a year

), due to the sensor locations relative to the bumper, I would say that both bumpers will result in a larger force upon the driver and definitely different from OEM airbag deployment.
Here is my reasoning: Crushing a compliant (squishy) material absorbs energy (force). The stock bumper is more compliant than an armored bumper, as evidenced by the dude who rear-ended the minivan. His vehicle looked practically untouched. The bumper did not collapse. While this is a good thing regarding actual damage to the vehicle, this will result in larger forces on you, the driver, due to essentially a stiffer spring between you and the impact surface.
This is partly why auto makers have begun making front ends so weak, it keeps people from dying because it crumples. People dying is bad publicity and regulated by the government, they would rather the car gets totaled.
This gets complicated, though, since the bumper is adding more mass to your vehicle. This means if you hit an object as the same size as you would without a bumper, you are likely to feel less of an impact. Of course, this applies to an object that can move freely. If you were to hit a solid wall or tree (something that doesn't give), then I think you are really going to feel it, as the driver.
The affect on mass of your vehicle and stiffer bumper on shock will undoubtedly affect the deployment of your airbags. Whether this will cause them to trigger early or late, I do not know due to the complexity of the system, but the timing will be off. Whether it will be off significantly to result in serious damage to yourself beyond a normal crash, who knows? But you will hit the airbags harder if you hit a tree or boulder or solid wall if they do deploy. If you hit another car or animal, you will probably be better off with the bumper (assuming they still deploy at high forces). Notice the guy going 30 mph did not have his bags deploy when he hit that van. I am not sure what speed they would typically deploy at.
I will probably get a bumper when they become available because I am confident that I won't be hitting anyone in the front. Not to say I haven't had some close calls with idiots going 50 mph in the left lane on the interstate. I am more worried about off-road or animal damage to my front end and the extra front clearance that comes with the bumper is prime. Plus the bumpers look bad ass and allow for a winch and lights, etc.
Sounds like Shrocks are the way to go, though. We'll see who has them done first.
My point here, though, is that they will both definitely impact your airbag deployment. If you are going to buy an armored bumper, you should be aware of that for personal health or insurance claim concerns. Seems like something an insurance provider would battle.
