Just passing some info along... emailed them about a winch bumper for 5th gens and got this response:

We do have plans to build a winch bumper for the 5th Gen 4Runners. As of now though they are just plans. Keep in tough and check the web-site for updates regularly.

Their 3rd/4th gen bumper looks awesome IMO.

If you can find someone with a 5th gen who lives close to Houston, I bet the guys at Shrockworks would love to make it.

well, you could talk to them and see if getting to work with your truck would make the 5th gen bumper possible. i'm not sure if that would speed the development along at all or not ... you'd have to talk to them.

The shrockworks one does look good, but the ARB's are created to work with your crash system/airbags. Not sure if the Shrocks are tested for that. You may get bad deployment in an accident. Just what I heard, correct me if I'm wrong.
 
Shockworks make some of the best bumpers. I personally think they look better than the ARBs. Too bad the wait is probably close to six months.

I'm not sure where you heard that but it is wrong. The airbags operate using a kind of force sensor, not some kind of crush plate. Any bumper should be fine, as far as airbags go.

I guess I have kind of been corrected, neither has crash test/air bag compliance. As a mechanical engineer who has done some work involving shock isolation (granted I've only done this for almost a year :D), due to the sensor locations relative to the bumper, I would say that both bumpers will result in a larger force upon the driver and definitely different from OEM airbag deployment.

Here is my reasoning: Crushing a compliant (squishy) material absorbs energy (force). The stock bumper is more compliant than an armored bumper, as evidenced by the dude who rear-ended the minivan. His vehicle looked practically untouched. The bumper did not collapse. While this is a good thing regarding actual damage to the vehicle, this will result in larger forces on you, the driver, due to essentially a stiffer spring between you and the impact surface.

This is partly why auto makers have begun making front ends so weak, it keeps people from dying because it crumples. People dying is bad publicity and regulated by the government, they would rather the car gets totaled.

This gets complicated, though, since the bumper is adding more mass to your vehicle. This means if you hit an object as the same size as you would without a bumper, you are likely to feel less of an impact. Of course, this applies to an object that can move freely. If you were to hit a solid wall or tree (something that doesn't give), then I think you are really going to feel it, as the driver.

The affect on mass of your vehicle and stiffer bumper on shock will undoubtedly affect the deployment of your airbags. Whether this will cause them to trigger early or late, I do not know due to the complexity of the system, but the timing will be off. Whether it will be off significantly to result in serious damage to yourself beyond a normal crash, who knows? But you will hit the airbags harder if you hit a tree or boulder or solid wall if they do deploy. If you hit another car or animal, you will probably be better off with the bumper (assuming they still deploy at high forces). Notice the guy going 30 mph did not have his bags deploy when he hit that van. I am not sure what speed they would typically deploy at.

I will probably get a bumper when they become available because I am confident that I won't be hitting anyone in the front. Not to say I haven't had some close calls with idiots going 50 mph in the left lane on the interstate. I am more worried about off-road or animal damage to my front end and the extra front clearance that comes with the bumper is prime. Plus the bumpers look bad ass and allow for a winch and lights, etc.

Sounds like Shrocks are the way to go, though. We'll see who has them done first.

My point here, though, is that they will both definitely impact your airbag deployment. If you are going to buy an armored bumper, you should be aware of that for personal health or insurance claim concerns. Seems like something an insurance provider would battle.

Pardon the dissertation. If there is someone experienced with designing for crash testing or shock impact out there, clear me up on any of the claims I have made if I have erred.

The airbag question is then.....why did the airbags NOT go off with the aftermarket bumpers in the videos of the FJs and the 4Runner crash pics. They both seem to have hit hard enough to set off the airbags.I've seen airbags set off with less of an impact then that on rear end fender bender accidents on the highways around here.

Is the aftermarket bumper possibly transferring that energy to what you hit with it and not let it be absorbed by the truck with the aftermarket bumper since it does'nt crush?

I would think airbag deployment would be affected by an aftermarket bumper too.I mean theoretically if your truck weighed a solid 100 tons and you hit somebody you would'nt even feel anything and the other vehicle would be obliterated and your airbags definitely wouldn't go off.

Haha, wouldn't that be fun. :D

Interesting point about why the airbag didn't deploy on the tree impact. I would expect the accel's to be seeing a larger shock than normal in that situation. Though it was more of a glancing hit than direct impact, how he still went forward but to the side, so maybe that played into it. Not as much energy into the vehicle.
 
I was under the assumption that they only activated after 30mph, at least thats what I picked up from the tiger woods scandal:cool:

Hit a deer with my old truck with an ARB winch bar on the front of it. 75mph+. Up on the 395 in the Sierras at 3 in the morning. Just came over a rise and there it was. Broke its back. Highway Patrol had to come out and put it down.

Not a scratch on the car. Cops thought I should have been dead. Most of the time they come up over the hood and through the windshield at that speed. Retouched the bumper with a little mat black spray paint.

I will buy the ARB bar within 45 seconds of it being released.

Glad you were ok, so at 75+ did they deploy???

Just another reason to carry a gun...
