Side/curtain air bags

Is it possible to have a not factory side airbag equipped vehicle fit with side (and/or curtain) airbags?

I'm thinking - not, but my wife is giving me hard time for buying an used 4ruuner without these, so I thought - at least I can ask...

I hope I understand your question correctly. You want to add side/curtain airbags to a 4Runner that currently does not have them?

You can, but it will be prohibitively expensive. It has been mentioned on the forum before, some insurance companies salvage/total out a vehicle if the airbags deploy. Hopefully that gives you an idea of the pricing. The other thought is most installers/techs/mechanics probably will not install them on a vehicle that doesn't have airbags due to liability issues.

Agree to add would be $5k. Fewer than 20% probably came with them up til about 2007. Your high up, in a strong heavy vehicle. So unless hit by a Mack truck or another SUv you are pretty safe. Have her sit in the middle of the back seat for safety.

According to Toyota, they cannot be retrofitted onto a vehicle that was not equipped with them in the first place. There are multiple sensors involved and harnesses that would need to be added. I think if you did add them and had a problem, Toyota would not be liable.
