Thought I would share my recent brake pad change experience with my 2005 SR5 V-6. The summary is USE TOYOTA PARTS (currently, they are made by Akebono).
In July I bought full ceramics for all four wheels. Monroe CX976, and CX 606, from RockAuto. The mfgr info there says they have quieter stops. These things squealed from day one. Slow stops, fast stops, it didn’t matter unless it was hard braking, then sometimes they would be quiet. But overall, they squealed like a pig. All four from what I could tell. After 500 miles, I began to not like driving my truck because it was so dang annoying.
Now, I made the stupid mistake of tossing my stock shims because of Monroe’s claim "Monroe pads are shipped complete with advanced rubberized shims pre-attached, as well as all required clips and lubrication”. It was stupid to toss mine, I know.
I recently ordered stock pads all around to get those Monroe’s off my truck so I could drive it in peace. Toyota fronts came as a kit with shims included (made by Akebono).
I’ve had them on for 30 miles or so, and they are dead quiet. The way brakes should be.
Parts were ordered from Greg at Metro Toyota in MI ((800) 581-3033). Parts ordered were:
04465-YZZ1A-TM (Front Pads w/ Shim kit. $55. Local wanted $90).
04466-60090 (Rear Pads only. $49. After quote on front pads, I didn’t even ask local for their price).
04946-30100 (Rear Shim Kit, with wear indicators. $16).
$10 shipping to Denver.
Monroe has lost a customer for life from this. Toyota and quite possibly Akebono have gained loyalty from me.
Also, RockAuto is a new vendor for me. I’m really impressed that they have agreed to give a 100% refund on the Monroe pads purchased through them. I asked for a refund w/in 30 days of purchase. Though one rep did cop an attitude with me and commented that everyone knew ceramics squeal. I told him that was interesting in light of Monroe’s claim to quiet ceramic pads.
