silver bumper trim paint peeling, coming off

This was "somewhat" addressed before, but some of the questions never specifically answered......

I have a black 03 sr5, and the silver paint on the middle front/back bumper trim pieces is peeling and coming off.

I would either like to paint them all black to match the body color, or replace them with the 05's, since those were black on the black body.

Does anybody have photos / direction on how to take these silver middle pieces off, and any suggestions on what to use to remove the existing silver paint that is peeling off, and a good match to respray them black.

Can the 03 trim pieces be replaced with 05, and are the 05's color coded (black) from the factory? p/n's for front and rear pieces if available.

As far as taking the paint off a pressure washer would work. The paint shouldnt' be peeling off unless the bumper was replaced and repainted. Toyota bumpers come in raw plastic and are very pickey to painting, I wouldn't suggest painting it yourself.
Calling your toyota dealer would tell you if the 05 part would fit and if you can get it in color from toyota you are going to be far better off than painting it yourself. Good luck, hope this helped.

colo4runner: Did you ever get the problem resolved? I have the exact problem with my '03 SR5...The paint on the front bumper and small areas on the grille is peeling off, to an extreme point right now, with more coming off at every wash...I'd attach pics, but they're hideous...
According to the dealer when I purchased it for the wife last year, the vehicle was a single-owner leased vehicle with no history of damage...even have the CARFAX to prove it, and the paint was fine...Talked with Toyota, but they won't do anything about it due to the age/mileage.

So I'm down to either convincing the wife to let me put a Shrockworks bumper on her daily driver or pay almost the same cost ($800-$900) to repaint or replace and repaint a new bumper skin...(it was hard enough to convince her to let me put a lift and tires on it)

Any thoughts? (anyone?)

Dan, I ended up buying some paint remover, appropriate sand paper, primer, glossy black auto paint - all from checker auto, masked it off, removed the silver paint, sanded, painted, put clear top coat on - came out much better than expected and was not that hard to do. the black blends with the rest of the factory color bumper - like the newer models. Now I don't have the silver peeling off, etc. I only had to do the back, the front had a small peel, but I sprayed some silver paint to keep it from getting worse. so far so good.

We've powdercoated a few silver. It looked really good and was a close match. Other than that, all I can say to convince her is that my wife's 4runner is the 3rd gen on our site...lifted, bumper and sliders....it's her DD and she works at a bank :biggrin2:

You mean you powder-coated one of the 4th Gen winch bumpers silver? That would be pretty sick, and easier to leverage wifely support than a black version...any pics? I've seen the black, white, and charcoal(?) versions on your site...all pretty sweet (I was actually leaning toward the charcoal-colored version), but a silver one would be sick...

Yea, we've done a 4th gen. I can't say it's a color match due to the finish but the customer was pretty picky and was very happy when he got it. If I had a silver, I'd go with it, I remember everyone here stopping at some point to mention how awesome it looked before it shipped.
