Simple headlight alignment??

Alright so last year l towed a U-haul across the country (CO to NY) and after getting flashed 20+ times I pulled over an lowered the lights. After returning the trailer, I thought I put the lights back, but it wasn't the same turns on the ratchet. Since then I've continued to mess with it doesn't look aligned. I've read the details on the professional alignment of lights, but here is my question. What is the simplest way of aligning them? In my last house I just would mark on the floor where my tires are and where the lights were on the wall. Well since I'm not near an open wall and in an apartment now this won't work. I'm thinking about just finding a wall on my next trip, but how far away should I park from the wall and what height should the lights be on the wall??? Thoughts?

There is probably a "rule of thumb" here, but here is what I would do.

I would find me a smooth wall and square-off about 20 feet from it, and make a mark on the pavement so I could drive and return.

If I was needing the lights higher, I would examine which light (L or R) is lower and adjust it first. Take a drive and see what you think. Keep making SMALL adjustments and remember to not go too high with your low-beams.

Now.....one issue. On my 07 Limited, the right-side light seems to have a feature that illuminates roadsigns and mailboxes. If I look at mine against a wall, the right side has an area on top that is higher. Not sure how to measure this, but I think you need to take it into account.

Good Luck

The simple rule of thumb is this;

Face a wall from 25 feet and turn on the headlights

The cutoff should be no higher than 4 feet from the ground

Adjust accordingly

there are tools to get the "perfect" alignment, but this is the simplest way

This is one of the more simplified aiming procedures I've found.

On my '06, there's a little dot on the lens cover. It appears to mark the center of the low beam projector. I'm not sure if the 2003-05 has this "dot". My Tacoma has this "dot" on its headlight and it looks to be in the center where bulb is.

A more extensive aiming procedure from Daniel Stern. It has pictures of what the lighting should look like on the wall towards the bottom.
