Sirius/XM trial - will they contact me?

Our SR5 came with a 3 month trial to Sirius/XM. I've been a XM subscriber almost since they launched years ago. Since I'm already a subscriber, I'm going to just add the T4R to my account as an additional radio when the time comes. I know I can just call them and set it up with the radio ID. But, I'm wondering if they will, eventually, contact me instead, sometime before the 3 months is up. I'm surprised I haven't gotten something in the mail already. Does it happen that way or does it just run out and you end up calling them when you realize you aren't getting any channels anymore?

I bought my 4runner in February and last week XM sent a letter to me with the subscription options.

If your just adding it to your account you could probably just call them to get it taken care of.

They ended up calling during the end of the trial for mine. They didn't offer a great deal, so I told them I will go without the service. Then a month or so later, they sent out a letter to me saying "We Want you Back! Get Half Off An Annual Subscription" and gave me a date that the off expired etc. Price was $77 for 12 months.

I still have the letter on my desk, so thats why its a little more specific per the details. I'm just waiting for the summer to possibly sign up again for their 4 (or 5 month) $20 deal.

Oh, this might help you get a better deal or not, but this was the number they had on the letter to call about the "special offer" 1-866-408-2996

At what point do they turn off the service?

Im at 4 months (and exactly 5,000mi by the time i get home) of ownership today and still have my satellite radio services.

BTW I have received a letter and 2 fliers in the mail over the past 2 months from the XM radio people. It took about 2 months for them to get the paperwork into my mailbox.

I'm sure it will be 3 months from whenever they "think" you began receiving it for free.

I really love sat radio on long drives but I, personally, don't make that many long drives anymore. As cheap as it is, I really don't get the use out of it to justify paying for it anymore. But I absolutely hate terrestrial radio. I always justified keeping XM because streaming it over my PC at home while I was working everyday was a nice way to still use it. But then they merged with Sirius and things started changing. Now they want to charge extra to stream online. I've called them to cancel it twice over the past year or so and they just throw 6 months at me for free to keep me as a subscriber. So, I won't hesitate to give them a hard time over the new vehicle if they try to pull me in to something at a higher cost and/or longer term. If I just threaten to cancel altogether, they will negotiate.

When exactly does it start?

My XM was already working when I picked up my 4R. Does the subscription starts on the day I picked up the car or when the dealership "activates" it. When we got the Mercedes for my wife, we had to call in and activate it for service to begin and its subscription begins on that day.

I’ve been a Sirius subscriber for years. When I got my 5th Gen in Dec 2010 I called….India….to try to transfer / roll over my Sirius account into XM on the new truck I was informed that it would not be possible as they are on two different systems. So, they made me cancel my old Sirius and set up a new XM account.

I was not really interested in the free 3 months as I wanted to hear Stern which was only available by getting the XM / Best of Sirius packages.

20 mins later they ended up giving me everything I wanted for free for three months but I have not heard from them since and the service is still running.

I guess I will need to call them at some point but man, do I hate trying to reason such call centers.

You will be getting a letter from XM about 60 days into your owning the vehicle with the different rates, selections etc.

I'm not sure how it works but we test drove a couple of 4runners before we purchased ours. All had XM already on and working so, I suspect they are just activated in general and no "subscription timers" are running until XM is notified that the vehicle has been sold, on what date, and to whom. At that point, the 3 month trial period starts. If you buy a vehicle that is equipped with it but doesn't include a free trial, you probably have to activate it on day one to get any service.

My subscription ran out and service shut off at exactly 3 months to the date of purchase. A couple weeks later I received a letter in the mail, asking to renew without any specials so I ignored it.

Two weeks later I get the 12mo/$77 letter in the mail. Tried to renew online with the link they gave for the special, but it only takes you to the standard ordering/pricing webpages. I have to call to take advantage of that lower rate, just haven't had time to do it yet (read procrastination).
