I bought a set of Yakima FatCat clamps from a local rack shop and then found a Thule 6-pair ski rack off Craigslist for $40 and use that. Simple, inexpensive and works awesome!

I had Yakima FatCat 6 racks and I liked them. Easy to install and quick way to get your skis on the car and go.

I didn't, however, like how much road salt got into my bases and bindings. Spent 1/2 hour minimum when I got home cleaning and making sure it was all off. The trip to Jay Peak through a snow storm was my tipping point.

When I got my 3rd Gen I found an older Thule Evolution box and I like it a lot. Perfect for 2-3 pairs of skis, 11" tall off the rack. Maiden voyage was last week to Mt. Snow. Couldn't be happier, especially with the amount of $$ I have into it.

I ski a lot, so the number of miles I put on it just made sense to protect my investment. Only downside is that the box is JUST too tall to fit in the garage. It is definitely worth the hassle of install/removal, though.

I have a Yakima Skybox 12 or 18 (longest / narrower version) on Thule Aerobar crossbars. My skis are pretty long (186cm) so they don't always fit neatly in all boxes (usually diagonally will work but take up more space).

I had to drill a couple extra holes to allow the box to sit far enough ahead to be clear of the rear hatch. Because the 4runner roof rails only start behind the sunroof, it can be an issue. I have a 2015 4runner, my buddy has a 2013 with the slightly shorter/wider Skybox 16 (I think). His fits fine with no conflict with the rear hatch.

If you go for a longer box, you'll want to check the rear hatch clearance.

I like roof boxes. Keeps everything out of the road grime and keeps all you're interior cargo space for gear. Mileage is certainly affected and you definitely won't fit in most garages / parkades.

Ski Gear

In order to maximize the roof space, I run 60" Yakima Jetstream bars which allow me to (carefully) mount a Yakima Skybox 16 and Rocky Mount Liftop Biggee ski mount for 4 pair. Happy as can be with all.

I use an interior ski rack. I made it from a piece of plywood and my CNC router. If you'd like the dxf file I can send it to you and you could cut your own. Or you could just use a jig saw or similar tool. Folds away when not in use. Costs very little.

How do the ski racks do with the round gobi rack cross bars? I’ve only seen them on more flat bars, do they tend to tip over with the round bars if not carrying skis?

Depends on the rack. I never had problems with mine. It was just a cheapo.
