Plain and simple...I have the factory roof racks and what do I need BARE MINIMUM in order to put some snowboards and skis on the roof. I went to REI and the guys tried to sell me $400 worth of Yakima towers, struts, braces, locks etc. Not lookin to do that.

Mucho appreciated.

I have all that jazz. But I have also tried the bare minimum. I believe the clip number is 10V. Check my thread linked in my sig and I discuss it more as well as provide links to relevant threads. The clips are pretty cheap....but the actual ski rack might be close to a hundred these days. I think you should be out the door less then $150.......you might even be able to buy some locks for that.

Search the net

Hey just a suggestion, when i run into a situation were something is a little more than im willing to pay i always go to EBAY or just search google. Just what i would do but hey! Good Luck let me know what you find b/c im going to CO in Jan and will need the same thing

I went to Clicky and was able to get the 10V clips, a Yakima Powderhound 6, and locks for $116 about this time last year. The clips allow the ski carrier to mount directly on the 4Runner's factory rack. The fit is excellent.

MAC -

Your description is exactly what I am looking for.

Any pics?

Is this the ONLY thing I will need?

Where are the locks and clips located?

http://www.sportsrack.com/products/racks68.html

That's exactly what you need. :D

The clips allow the Powder Hound to attach to the factory rack and the locks keep your boards and the rack from getting jacked on your way to the slopes.

Enjoy!

EDIT - Sorry but no pics!

Colorado Ski and Golf is running a special for the Powderhound, clips, and locks for $100. Let me know if you're interested and I'll grab some contact info. Happy Holidays!

I used my Thule I had on my other car (VW Golf). It will hold either snowboards or skis. The only change I made was to buy the FatMouth Clamp to connect it to the factory cross members.

Found these prices at REI:

Thule 6 ski carrier (also holds boards) $110
or,
Thule 4 ski carrier (also holds boards) $100

FatMouth Clamp $35
Locks and Keys $22

I've had my rack for over 8 years now and it has no major wear. I use it all the time and its on all winter. The Fatmouth was a bit more expensive but I can use it on any type of bar (ie thule, factory, yakima). I see it as an investment. Personally, I like the looks of the Thule over the Yakima. Rounded look I think goes well with the 4Runner.

Later,

G3 Trout Runner

So here is what I ended up getting with prices attached:

Powerhound 6 (Fits 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards) $53.10 fromm Galyans

Core Locks: 10 bucks on ebay

10V Might Mounts: 5 bucks ebay

for a total with shipping of .........$78.10 for EVERYTHING. Kind of a pain to buy from different sources but if you are trying to save some mula this is the route to go.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Why the need for all that stuff?

I bought a set of Barrecrafter Aerro racks that already come with the mounting clamps for the roof rack's cross bars. They also have built-in locks.

I simply clamp them on my roof rack and I'm ready to go!

Plus, they look great with the my silver roof rack.

Yakima quality would be my guess and is part of the reason I re-used mine from my Mustang.

Is it better than Barrecrafter quality?

This will be the fourth year that I'm using my Aerro's and they have been excellent so far, and I leave them on all winter long.

Nice work! :bigok:

i just got the yakima big powderhound 6 skis/ 4 snowboard roof rack packeage including a pair of locks and mighty mounts for the 4runner roof rack for $89.95 + tax! this is a lot less than most online places if you were to buy the rack, locks and mounts. i think the rack itself goes for this price... you can buy it online tax free but with shipping:

http://www.sportsrack.com/products/...ma-Big-PowderHound-6-Pair-Package-Z3037P.html

or if you live close to a sportsrack, print out that page and take it in like i did, you'll save a little by paying tax instead of the shipping. and the guy at the store was blown away that their store would sell the set so cheap.
this includes everything you need to carry skis/snowboards on the 4runners with stock roof racks!

it's a little more than Mpower3's deal but this way is instant gratification, there's no searching and footwork involved!

i think it would look good if it mounted more flush with the roof of the truck. i liked it too until i saw how high up it sat on the crossbars. too bad..
