Article from an Off Road training company about clearing the brush from skid plates -- Skid Plate Fires

There is an area near me with 2 foot tall dry weeds that I have avoided going through due to the catalytic converter, did not think about stuff in the skids.

Definitely a smart thing to check! We have had two work trucks burn to the ground along with acres of land because guys were doing work at remote valve sites and their exhaust was so hot it caught dry grass under their trucks on fire. We all carry extinguishers on our trucks but dry brush burns FAST

Just a few years ago there was a major fire here in San Diego county that destroyed a Shriner's camp, among other things. The fire was caused by brush caught under a Border Patrol vehicle that caught fire while driving, spreading the fire.

I've actually had an under-vehicle fire caused by brush getting stuck in the skids. It was after I had come out of the field (dove hunting) in the evening and was on the highway. I had a couple of cars pass and honk, but dumb me, I just thought they were being friendly. My brother, who was following me, called me and said I was on fire. Pulled to the shoulder, grabbed some gloves, dove underneath and pulled out the offending brush. Caught it in time, but could have been much worse!

jrandom, A j's car caught on fire because it was a Nissan with the heater on! Lol
