skid plate options

This is ONLY opinion and mine and my hubbys alone:

who makes the cheapest yet still strong and durable skids? RCI is probably the cheapest. Check out Htown's he hits hard and they have lasted great!

what year fj skids are compatible with my runner and which skids?2007-2009 are almost a perfect match for the 6cyclinder ( not the 8 )

would it be cheaper to have a local shop fabricate some rather than paying the high price plus high shipping cost of namebrand skids? Looked into fab work $500 bare min to quickly over $2k

how bout reinforcing the existing skids? how hard do you plan on hitting? If you were local we could show you some hard hitting videos.

I was thinking bout maybe using the fj skids or reinforcing the existing skids and then just getting an aftermarket front skid since that's the only you will really see...

what do you guys think. thanks

Personal opinion shrockworks is probably the best ( minus the 16 month back order and cost ). They have lasted where other vendors skids have failed on the same type of vehicle ( pics can be supplied but I don't want to start a fight ). I am personally going to install RCI after seeing Andrew and the hits / dragging he has done. They look great after the abuse and are signifigantly cheaper! I hope this helps some. If you have any questions PM me or reach out to my hubby Rsivley on the fj forums hes almost always on.

well thank you very much, very good info and direct to my OP.. I will check into the RCI, do you know whether the fj skids are much better than the stock t4r, as for local fab I have some skills myself and have friends with great fab skills so I know I can get it for a decent price, I don't plan on hitting too hard just want protection in the case I do scrape or hit, thanks again for the info.

Spend the money once and get an aftermarket skid. FJC stock skids get pretty busted up with trail use. RCI pricing is pretty reasonable. Just get it bare and spray it yourself. Since I've never used any other skids other than stock, I can't say they are THE best. They have definitely held up for me though.

Only thing I would do differently is order the skids without all the holes.

thanks for the input

To be honest , Ryan ( hubby ) trashed his stock skids first run through hidden falls. I think there is a certain amount of respect in having made your own skids and if you have the skills would highly recommend it!

You never know someone else might like them and want you to make them a set. You could be the next Budbuilt lol. Ryan wishes he had access to machine shop tools but he couldn't make a decent weld to save his life lol. He can however tear down his motor and rebuild it in a day if he needed to.

Wish you weren't so far away Id say come by we could BBQ and you could look at a few sets. Local FJ guys have Ricochet , BB , ShrockWorks , RCI , who knows what else. Always nice to have a comparison.

Good luck to you and dont hesitate to PM me if we can help in any way.

ok so I guess the FJ's are out of the question.

I do have the skills to do it myself but I already have custom cars that takes all my time and effort and my t4r was supposed to remain stock lol.. but I guess im facing the fact that I will customize anything and everything I get my hands on. I really don't want another project though.. but my friends will do the work for pretty much a case of beer and material.

And please don't tease me with a BBQ, I don't care how far you are I will show up lol jk. but Yeah it would be nice to compare..
