Skid Plate Question

Anybody know where I can score a skid plate like Clemsonfan15? Whether it's the "Sport" or "Tacoma" one? If I get the Tacoma one are the holes already pre-drilled? I called my local dealer and Toyota stopped making them...Please point me in the right direction! Thanks, Jeff

I have no idea where you can get them, but I think that the Tacoma skid plates only work with 96-98 front ends. For 99-02 you will need the actual 4Runner skid plate that came on the Sport Edition. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I used to have a link for the skid plate at TRDParts4U but the link is dead now unfortunately. You can use the Tacoma skid plate for the 99-02 bumpers but you just have to fab up some extender brackets if you want it to sit flush. RonMAIDEN has done this on his truck.

can anyone comment on the factory support for vehicles stops after 10 years of production,i know for most jeep parts they do this after a model comes out they have a 10 year parts limitation on it , like how they no longer make these skids for the 96-98's since this is 2009.....don;t get me wrong i know they still produce serviceable parts but for most factory options the usually discontiune them after 10 years.

i have come across this for numerous vehicles of different brands,
and this doesn't include outsourced parts such as water pumps,alts, ect ect ect.

anyone else notice this?

from being in an engineering field i can say that's how most companies do it as
you can't support a machine/vehicle forever. it's usually in a contract somewhere that you'll supply serviceable parts at a cost for x amount of years.

or am i just reading into things to much? yeah stupid question i know. lol

Another idea would be to check out your local junkyards, you might get lucky if you can find a Tacoma or Sport 4Runner that has one on there, provided it didn't get totaled from a collision on the front bumper of course.

It's basically nonfunctional though, more for looks. Still looks nice though

The older skidplates debuted on the '01 or '02 Tacomas and were only used on the '02 4Runner Sports but it seems in the last year or so you can't get them and it's not unusual for a company to discontinue a part sooner if it's not a must need/in demand part.

The skidplate for the Tacoma and 4Runner is the same but the brackets are different. The official 4Runner version put the plate to low and too far forward for my taste and I prefered using the Tacoma brackets and making simple 3" plates to extend the plate to hug the bumper perfectly.

so what year tacoma works on the 96-98 4runner. cause i have a 97 so it would it just bolt up with no mobs or do you have to mod it somehow?

There is only one Tacoma skid plate. It works for all years of the 3rd Gen, but if you want it to stick out a little on the '99+ 4runners then you need to make a bracket.

I bought mine from trdparts4u.com, but it seems like have stopped carrying them.
