Skid plate...Which one???

Wassup My 4R Peeps!

Ive been seeing basically two different skid plate designs mounted on 4th gen 4R and Tacomas. One has many smaller holes along the front the other is a "T" shape with two bigger wholes on each end.

I personally like the one with lots of holes versus the "T" shaped two hole version. I will try and get pix of the two plates for visual purposes.

Your thoughts about these plates? How much did you spend on them?

Here is my second choice plate about $190/ea. I will try and post the other plate I see driving around.

Here is my first choice. It just looks better to me. Anybody know of any differences between the two. Material thickness, durability issues, etc. Let me know.

your first choice is my favorite one also but it is basically just for looks. if you were to go off road, it can easily get beaten up and bent and what not. im not so sure about the other one but from the looks of it, it seems more durable.

I like the first one better of the two and its cheaper, I got mine for about 125, Its easy to install and looks good. Doesn't do anything though

Both of the skid plates are just for looks.

If anything, they will cause more damage off road then they will prevent. I have one and it is trashed.

Will your second choice (first pictured) fit the 4th Gen 4Runner? I thought those were for the Tacoma??? I ask cause I was thinking about getting one for mine...

I actually like that one better..... but both are cool...

Didn't know that they both are for looks, I assumed they were more durable...

I have seen the tacoma style one on 4Runner before, not sure how creative you have to get to make it fit, but it can be done.

And I can personally attest to both as I had a Taco with the skid and my 4Runner has the other style, they are not durable at all.

On my 4runner it gets bent up very easily and all it takes to get it bent back is a few good kicks, so it is clearly not strong. It actually causes more damage than you would have without it, since it gets pushed up into the plastic bumper and can mess both up.

Go with Bud Built skids. As stated by others those skids you posted are just for looks.

I have to agree, if you want a skid that can actually perform, go with the budbuilt its worth every penny. i high centered on a rock on mine with the whole right side of the truck off the ground and the skid held up just fine. dont try that with the factory plate.

But if he simply wants the looks (which it sounds) and doesn't off road then the Tacoma faux plate is a nice cheap looks mod and if you do off road then it should be removed like mine is but on-road the plate does add a little flair.

or if you really want the look of the first one and don't want it to fold up in an offroad situation, then give me a PM, i'm having the same plate cut out of 3/16th steel rather than the aluminum that toyota offers.
