skid plate

Can someone tell me where 2 get a skid plate other then dealer????, they want a lot of money for it.:cursin:

That faux skidplate has saved my ass a few times, but yeah, could be stronger.

Don't bother looking in the junkyards, they take those things off the first second they get a 3rd gen so they can take out the motor.

Usullay there are guys areound here and yotatech and such that are taking there stock ones off to replace tehm with budbuilt.

Might want to talk to them.

But in my opinion if it needs replacing why not just upgrade?

no,I'm talking about the factory "rice" Tacoma plate that also came on the later 4Runners and liek I have on mine which is removed for any off road excursion.

there is a skid plate that runs from the radiator down to the differential and then from that skid plate runs another that covers the differential.
It has worked for me so far.

and the one Ron was talking about is one that is just for looks, and iirc that particular skid came on the 99+ Highlander/sport edition Runners and some of the Tacos.

yeah, and it's completely worthless when brushed up against a rock :biggrin2: You can see it in my avatar just prior to getting mangled by some rocks...





I've looked into custom laser cutting a new skidplate to replace this one. I drew up one in CAD and had it CNC'd out of steel. Haven't gotten much further than that....

Any OEM Skid doesnt do anything worthwile other than delay the inevitable. Replace that POS Tin with a BudBuilt Skid and you will never have any worries. It supports the weight of the entire truck when dropped on a rock!

Looks like you have a 99, sounds like the 98's have a better skidplate. Can anyone confirm or deny?

all the 4runners from 96-02 have the same skid plate the drops from the radiator to the diff and then goes from the diff to the crossmemeber to cover the diff.

The 99+ had a tiny style skid right under the front bumper. that one is worthless.
I have landed on rocks with my stock skids and have been fine.

Actually that plate didn't appear on the 4Runners til '02 but I retrofitted a Tacoma version's brackets to make mine fit and yes,it's strictly for looks.

I've scuffed my stock ones up a bit and if I did more serious roading I'd upgrade to a set of Bud's.

Stepdad has an 02' sport and i wasn't completely aware if it was just his year or if there had been previous years to have it.
