Skid plates/Tire update

Hey all,

Wound up getting the Pirelli Scorpions in 265/70/16 stock size. Haven't put'em on yet, just got'em yesterday from Tirerack. Man, they look awesome. Getting them installed Saturday and will let you know how I like'em once I have some miles on them.

What front skid plate brands can anyone recommend? Have a 2000 limited. I like the ones from skid-row automotive. Any thoughts?

I had the Scorpians on before last winter hit - man they can hold - but a little "sensative" for me. Switched back to BF's before the snow hit.


As for the skidplate...I might try to fabricate my own using some diamond-plated aluminum sheets - then using high-heat flat black paint to hide "da Bling"
 
Hey Lee. I do like those those budbuilt skids. Did you check out skid-row's work? They are the same thing, but only slightly different. I just placed my order for these.

Hey 8ac1v1c, when you say "sensitive," can you please elaborate? poor wet traction? curious.

never heard of skid row... so im not sure what their quality is like... budbuilts are of known quality.

but yeah those skid row ones do look good :)

They where too much like a passenger or import sport car street tire. They where very quite and had an awesome tread pattern.

I guess you could say they had EXCELLENT traction - actually a little too good for a daily driven SUV. Any road inperfections - the Scorpians wanted to take advantage of. If there was a slight dip to the right tires - the Scorpians wanted to pull right into it - and you would be fighting to keep it straight.
 
Well, got the skid plates from skidrow automotive. Dude, not even close to fitting. They are advertised for Tacoma/4runners for my year, 2000. Tacomas must be different because they said they got there dimensions off Tacomas. They are really cool about it, and have been talking to Rick over there and is surprised they don't fit. Go figure. They are being sent back, prepaid by them. Going with Downey skids. It's too bad because these suckers are really nice. Beefy, love the cutout in the front skid for oil changes (will cutout myself on the downey). These are big heavy hunk of steel!

The Pirelli Scorpions, dude, are sooo nice. Look awesome, ride like a dream (only about 300 miles on'em, but already can tell). will be testing them this weekend in some trails in the pine barrens in NJ.

taco skids are a little different, but man thats irresponsible of them to sell the product advertising it as a direct fit.

why downey and not budbuilt?
 
Went over to talk to Bud at budbuilt. Nice guy. he is looking for a building so he can increase his products. Ordered the budbuilt skids and belly pan with black powder coat. get them in a couple of weeks. the good thing about Bud, he only does toyotas and he knows how to build products for them.
 
I think they are talking real off-roadskidplates. The Tacoma ones also came on the '02 Runners but are useless against anything hitting them.

The plates that came on the '02 Runners had different brackets hence you having too modify extensions;IMO the extention pices make it fit better than the Runner brackets which stuck out too far and too low. I did the same thing as you a couple of years ago and I like the plate hugging the bumper but it's removed when I go off-road.
 
Right, they are for offroad. the budbuilt are 3/16 inch of steal, nothing going through them. I have a dent in the factory ones. I will be going to lake city colorado the end of june and doing some 4wheeling. we will be doing cinnamon, engineer, california and the american basin. we will be staying at a cabin at 10,600 feet. All the passes I mentioned are over 12,600 feet.
 
ron, notice in your profile that you have the supercharger. I added it in November. really like it. you are from littleton, so you must have done of the trails in the san juans. I have also done several in the st elmo area.
