skips, runs rough after heavy rain

Twice now after heavy rains, I have had problems with my '95 V6 auto transmission. It runs rough, skips and has trouble shifting until the engine has run a good 10 min. Does the '95 4runner have a history of such problems? It seems to run OK after it dries out a while, but the first time, it was so bad I almost got stuck a mile down the road from my house. Anyone else with this problem. Suggested solutions? Thanks.

sounds like something that is not suppost to get wet is getting wet......make sure the distributer is staying dry.....does your 4runner have a skid plate underneath?

Yes to the skid plate. Reminds me of a similiar problem I had with an old Corolla, when I sprayed the inside of the distributor with WD40 it was OK.

give that a shoot and see if that works....but that would be my first guess

Mine runs a bit funny when its wet out too, not as extreme as you but it definitely doesnt run as nice as when its dry. I actually posted about this before and still not sure what causes it.

Not getting much of a response, but I had an old corolla and an old Dodge Ram50 pickup (Mitsubishi engine) that had similiar skipping and near stalling problems when I rode behing a truck on the highway in a rain storm. My buddy told me the trick with the WD40, spray the inside of the distributer, cap and all wires and it would run fine after that. Good to keep in the car. It was developed for the military to disperse moisture and dirt on the old Nike missle systems during the 50's or 60's.

You can have a crack in your distributor cap that is to small to see, or plug wires that are going bad. If you haven't replaced these, that is the place to start.(cap first)

Have now seafoamed, replaced distributor cap and rotor (plugs an wires are only a few months old). It rained heavy last night and today and the problem was as bad as ever. Could not rev past 2300 rpm and tranny wouldn't shift. Misfired going up hill. After it ran for 5-10 min. and heated up, ran fine. At wit's end. Has anyone had this problem? What kind of computer type equipment does a 95 have? It has to be moisture getting in somewhere, but where?
