Slave Cylinder?

I got a 98 4runner today and the shifter slowly got harder to shift all day. Now I cant even shift into 1st or reverse. Does anybody know what this could be? I heard that it could be a bad slave cylinder but I thought someone on here might know. Also some more info, I can shift fine when the car is off. It just wont go into gear when I turn on the engine.
- thanks.

It is most likely either the slave cylinder like you have been told or the clutch master cylinder. I would change both as replacing one can cause the other to go before long. they are simple to change yourself especially the slave. I've replaced Slave's on the trail. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip man. I think im going to take your advice and replace both cylinders. Hope to get back 4running soon ! until the parts come Im stuck driving my moms toyota celica :dammit: :ybrick: haha.

Yeah I guess but Im happy with it. I have another question though... my dad bought it from his friend and he thought it was a 98. So I just ordered the slave and master cylinders for a 98 without looking at the vin number like an idiot. Will they still fit the 91 or do I have to reorder them?

The master cylinders are known for taking a **** on those. Same with tacomas. Done 100 of em at the shop.

I put it up on the rack today and looked at the slave really good and bled it. I cant find any leaks and It seems to extend properly, so I dont think that the problem is in the hydraulic system anymore. Tomorrow Im going to take the tranny out and get to the clutch. Is there any other minor problem that I could have overlooked before I do this?

Dude you're wasting your time pulling tranny out... I've seen this and replaced lots of masters at work a million times. Only other things it could be are the flex hose or the clutch pedal bracket.

I wouldnt say its a waste of time... Im in an auto shop class and that is what my instructor said I should do. Its a learning experience for me anyway and those can't be the only causes of a clutch not disengaging completely. Couldn't it also be a worn pilot bearing or something?

The shift lever bushing is something to look into also, especially if you are willing the pull the damn tranny. Marlin crawler makes one piece shifter bushing replacements and are a known wear area.
Also, replace the rear main seal while you have the trans out.

Figured it out after i replaced the clutch ... its just a cracked pedal bracket. It just made the pedal too low to disengage all the way. I havent fixed it yet but Im going to try to weld the crack and if that fails just buy a new one.

does anyone know where I can get a new clutch pedal bracket? I got it out today and I was going to weld it but I think Id rather get a new one because it will probably just break again
