I checked with the dealer about installing the cargo tray now, they said it is a costly pain in the ass job to install, so I'm going to build the platform. Thanks for the input everyone.

Mr. 4OYOTER, could you please say which AirBedz model you are using, and what year 4Runner you have? Also, did you remove the rear seats and put supports in the space, so that bed extends further forward? (see Darren's post)
Thanks, it looks comfortable.
Camping cots are a great way to preserve more storage space than a platform, and have good headspace for a single person out back.

No modifications. I just simply folded down the back seats and moved the front seats forward. It did feel like I was sleeping slightly "slanted" from my head by the front seats, down towards the rear hatch. But I couldn't feel the hump. 2013 SR5
What year is your 4Runner?
With the back seats folded down I have only 65". For the whole mattress to fit I would need to take out the seat bottoms as someone has described above. Then there would indeed be plenty of room for that 72" mattress.
Can anyone else comment on this ?
Thank you.

OK that explains it. I'm just pondering whether it might be just as well to take out the seat bottoms, since I am 6'1".
I'm still baffled how your 72" long air mattress fits into a 65" space. And even so, unless you are 5'-5" or shorter, dont you have to sleep diagonally in the truck bed?

Unless you are a dwarf I honestly don't know how you could sleep with the seat bottoms folded up and not removed. Removing them gives you 12" of extra space. At 6'01" you will want that. Plus I'm sure you've noticed that you can't put the front seats all the way back with the rear seats folded up into the passenger footwells... the whole contraption was designed for people the size of horse jockeys. It will be aggravating on a camping trip to have to keep flipping the seats around and moving stuff in the back just to be able to slide the driver's seat back far enough to drive.
Plus it's not like it's a chore to remove them. It's 4 14-mm bolts. Takes about 2 minutes.
Y'all might want to remeasure. The space is more like 69" (sorry about the slightly diagonal measurement). If you have ever used an air mattress you will know it is FLEXIBLE, depending on the amount of inflation.
I'm not saying this the the ONLY or PERFECT solution. I'm simply saying it is in option that works for me. Cost and simplicity are the reason it is a great option for me. If your wood working skills or budget is better than mine, than do what's best for you!..
I'm also not saying it's a California King size mattress to sprawl out on with ample room. But it did sleep two adults and a dog. ( Yes, probably diagonally)
+1 on the cot for one sleeper. It gets your head up and over the back of the folded back seats.
You do need to push the front seat forward a bit, but you can keep stuff under it, too.
I used a couple of bits of 2x4 under the back feet to level it out.

Interesting alternative, and thanks for posting the link.

My 6'2 son slept fully extended on the cot on a March road-trip. It worked out very well. I've only spent one night, but it was comfortable. I'm just under 6', but I am old.
I also installed something like these to prevent condensation build-up, but you'd probably be fine just cracking the rear window by an inch.
