I'm quite sure you can IF you have all the parts. Best to find someone who has one and want's to get rid of it and do the swap side-by-side.
That said, I had to limit my choices on a new 2014 just to get one without the siding tray, but that's OK, I'll never have one with one again.

I should have explained my beef with the tray:
1) It raises the cargo by about 3-1/2 inches, which may not seem like a lot, but if your bike doesn't clear by 3", that's a lot! :doh:
2) It extends only about 18" which I understand that it would probably need a heavier frame to support a longer extension, but hey, it doesn't get the back cargo out far enough for me to benefit enough to have it. :der:
3) It's $500, which I would rather spend on a remote start, which I could really use! :bigok:

Swapped out my sliding tray a few months back. Fairly simple and direct swap. It is sitting in my basement collecting dust, will to sell locally if any one is interested.

I assume that there are mounting brackets that attach to the floor of the cargo area (under/thru the carpet) and that all models have the holes drilled for attaching the brackets? How's it look after taking it out?

What bike do you have that won't clear? I have an Trek XL 29'er that clears just fine with the tray! I am pretty sure that there are very few bikes bigger from the bottom of the front shock to the handlebar.

The frame of the tray is the mount and bolts directly to the floor. The only separate brackets are for the front storage compartment, these brackets are different between the two set-ups.

Nice set-up! I have a 29er in large with a 140 fork. It's 34" from bottom of fork to top of handlebar. I have about 32-1/4" opening top to tray, and that's w/o the wood/bracket that you have. It's just the deficit (2 3/4) I was talking about. :nono:
The tray is really a love/hate thing. :cry2:

No the wood is not secured. I have the Toyota Tray mat and nothing will slide on that. In addition, the back tire is only about 3 microns from touching the folded down seat AND when I am hauling the bikes to a strange and distant land I always haul luggage for myself and my wife. We learned long ago to only use soft sided duffels with no frame or handles or wheels so the luggage can "mold" into your packing space. Riding a plane? Yeah, we have hard sided luggage for that. Packing in the 4Runner? Soft luggage, preferably with a waterproof bottom. I actually use a dry bag sometimes as my luggage lol.
You can slide the tray out though with the bicycle still hooked to the mount. I wanted to make it temporary so it was easily removable. I cut the board long enough to provide a stable lateral platform too.
I do need to make a new mount though as I will be bringing one of these home in the next month or so:
