Sliding out on dirt roads

Rumbling around escalante,ut today in my 2001 sport runner and was going down some wash board when the vehicle started to slide around on the road so much that the VSC kicked in and almost lost control. Going about 30-40 mph. Would a different suspension help help this? I am on stock sus. Or just slowing down and getting my brains rattled out?

I experience this all the time. Our runners have stiff suspension, no real way around it.

i would pop in 4wd if you werent already...just my opinion

It isnt necessarily to stiff a spring but the rebound and compression rates of the shock just arent fast enough on the shock to compensate. goping to better shocks will help a little but unless you spend big money and time tuning the suspension then you wont ever have a real cure. Motorcycle teams and off road racers carry several sets of shocks tuned for various terrain. Unfortunately for those of us that use our 4Runners for street and mixed off-road we will never have it tuned for all surfaces.

Yes, besides the shocks their is a reason why they run knobby tires. The road might look washboard, but it only takes 1/8th inch of gravel, some speed and a corner to loose control with street tires.
