Slight whining noise

I have a 2004 Vg 2wd SR5.

I've noticed recently a slight whining sound that appears to be coming from somewhere around the front driver side of the engine compartment.

It doesn't do it all the time, only after driving for a bit - I can hear it when we pull in the driveway after going somewhere. I think it only happens when the car is in gear, I think it stop when we put in in Park (I'd have t confirm this though).

Everyone's been great with help so far, any guesses on this one?

Are you due for an oil change? I tend to notice the same sound but when I get my oil changed it seems to go away until its almost time for another change.
 
I hear that too, but it comes from the back seat, I think it is my kid strapped in the car seat behind me, I have to check (lol)
 
Hmmm whining noise..

Put your car in park, rev your engine
does it get higher pitched as your RPMS increase? If so turn your radio off and reapeat, if it goes away, your getting alternator whine through your stero (prob if you have the JBL system this will happen, very unlikley if you have the base system)

If it shuts off with the radio, but does not increase with engine speed..Its a possible grounding loop.

If it comes from the engine compartment and goes with the rpm then it might be the cams, which is a normal sound. I have a V8 and mine doesn't do it, not sure about the V6's though...
 
my 04 sport has been making the same noise.... it sounds like an old tired power steering pump... but under hard acceleration it kinda sounds like a super charger!!!!!:rocker:

Its been making that sound for about 20k... so I am not too worried about it. at about 30k I drained the power steering fluid and replaced it... maybe that had something to do with it?

Sometimes in traffic if I see another V-6 4-runner I will listen to see if I can hear the same sound... about 5 outta 10 i can hear the same whine... so i guess its normal??? The steering is fine and it still runs great... and its not as loud as the valve clatter on my 93 Pickup!!!
 
i have had this whining noise now for about 5000 miles. My car has 120 400 miles on it. I waited until i got around to changing my oil hoping it would go away after. It has not. I am the second owner of the car the first being my aunt up to 115000 miles. the only thing i can think of is i did take it offroad. Is there a possible ground that i got snaged on something down low? has anyone else had progress with there whine.
 
04 sr5 whining 120k miles

I bought the car about 5 years ago with 70k on it. It has been an great car but I cant figure out what is going on now...120K MILES ON IT NOW...

In 2010, I was getting the whine of the alternator going bad so I took it in and had the alternator and battery replaced. It was fine up until this past Thursday morning. I'm pretty in tune with the sounds of our cars, so when I noticed the whine, I took it in to the shop that did the alternator. Luckily, the alternator was still under warranty, so the shop replaced it with a new alternator and replaced the tensioner pully. The WHINE STILL REMAINS! I've looked on this website, but I'm still not sure what may be wrong. I'm worried it could be the tranny, but in talking with people, they and I don't think so because the whine exists when the car is in park and neutral. I'm wondering it might be something with the differentials. At this point, I'm planning to take it back to the shop tomorrow morning. I'll let you know what I find out and hoping you'll do the same if you have any developments...

Maybe the idler/tensioner pulleys on your engine are tired. I have the V6 and replaced mine recently, and it mostly eliminated any whine I was hearing.

There's a write up about this somewhere on here or toyota 120. There are (3) idler pulleys, plus the tensioner pulley. All can be had on rock auto for less than $200 total, shipped.

If that doesn't solve it, there's also the a/c compressor pulley, ps pump pulley, etc. that all have the potential to make whining noises as they begin to fail.

Whining noise 4th gen 4.0

So I had this noise on off twice now and the second time it stayed. I’ve surfed these forums looking for answered and turned to YouTube and found that the sound is coming from a bad alternator. Video showed a Toyota Camry that was making virtually the same sound as my runner with the same noise when they gave it some throttle, the mechanic unplugged the alternator while the motor was running and the whining died immediately. At this point I’m pretty convinced that it’s my alternator.

I have rhisnnoise but its speed/acceleration related. I talked to someone at east coast gear works and he thinks it might be a needle bearing. I've been living with it for over a year. I might see if I can drive it with the alternator unplugged and see what happens...
 
Mine had a whining noise last weekend, wound up being a failed alternator.

Might be worth swinging through your local auto parts store and having them throw a tester on it.
 
Not sure about yours but mine whines when I accelerate. I have an 18’ TRD OFF RD W/ 64k on it. I just started to notice the whining sound but only when I accelerate, and it isn’t very noticeable with the sound of the engine and exhaust. Not sure if it’s normal and I’m just now noticing it or if it’s something actually wrong.

very old thread... & this is the 4th gen section, might get better help for your 5th gen in the 5th gen section.
