Slightly diff. MAF question I think

So today I decided I was going to finally clean the MAF and hopefully clear the Check Engine light

First, I was going to try moving the cruise control out of the way and remove the MAF to clean. But the two little screwed were really rusted in and I started to strip one so I stopped that.

Then I decided I would just remove the entire airbox (is that what it is called?) and that is where first annoyance started. My 4runner has the snorkel, not sure if that makes a difference, but the intake hose (is that what it is called?) was incredibly tight coming off. Like, way tighter than I would think it should be. But got it off with the help of a flathead screwdriver for prying. You can probably see where this is going.

Sprayed the MAF and let dry then went to trying to put it back together. But that damn hose just seems too small/too tight. I cannot get it back on.

I tried wiping male/female end with a wet cloth, rubbing a bit of dish soap around, using a hair dryer to soften the rubber hose, and I am still unable to fit it back on.

Now, I am not mechanically inclined but damn this is annoying me. It easily goes into output hose (sure that is wrong but hopefully makes sense) but this was so tight coming off and just seems too small. Beyond reasonably tight.

So...any suggestions? Something I am missing? Am I just an idiot?

Either way, I am driving the Camry tomorrow as I ran out of daylight today so would love to finish this otherwise simple job tomorrow

I see the pics now. Sounds like the snorkel is mismatched to the airbox? I'm not familiar with the snorkel, so I can't really comment on that.

Also sounds like you tried all the logical steps (lube, heat). I guess short of looking for an adapter or making a cut in one side or the other, I'm not sure what else to do. Obviously someone somehow mated them before, so maybe try to find a gorilla to do it again?

yeah, that is what is killing me. It was put together before but damned if I know how

I guess an adapter might be an option. I really want this fixed ha

To the original poster: You'll probably have to take off the fender liner and get access to the back side to help you get it on.

If you don't pull the MAF out of the housing, you can't get the important part clean. It is hidden "up" the tube in the MAF and you can't see it without removing it from the intake tube. Use a JIS screwdriver, not a Phillips screwdriver to avoid stripping the threads on those screws.

Did a quick measurement and the hose is 1/2 inch smaller. Approximately 2.75 to 3.25

No, up inside the wheel well. The black plastic cover above the wheels, behind the fender. You need to be able to get a hand on the other end of the elbow to help you push it on the airbox.

so between kid's soccer and cold weather I did not have time to work on it this weekend

I think I need to see if I can just get a larger hose, maybe this one shrunk over time? I dunno

In the meantime I do need to drive my truck somehow

So few questions/thoughts?

What happens if I do not reconnect that hose to the intake box? Any negative side effects?

The previous owner also did the deckplate mod. So if I did not connect the hose back and unscrewed the deckplate from the front of the airbox would I be ok to drive? I know at that point the snorkel is non-functioning but I am not leaving pavement anytime soon either

Anything else I am missing as easy alternative until I can get this hose issue fixed?

You are fine to drive it as long as the intake tube is connected to the MAF section of the airbox. Anything farther away from the engine than the MAF and air filter doesn't really matter as long as it isn't a restriction.

Get good measurements of the tube in the fender and the airbox inlet sizes and get a hose from here that fits better:

If it's the Amazon snorkel for the Hilux 167, then yes it is small, but it will go on. I find it easier to take the next section of that hose off (above the tire) and that will give you a bit more wiggle room. The section above your tire is much easier to go together.

Get a bit of grease and lube it up. A heat gun on that rubber tube can help also (Don't over cook it, duh!). If you don't have one, take your GFs hairdryer.

Two screwdrivers can be your friend as you work it onto the airbox.

so I went ahead and just removed the deck plate and put the airbox back in

and so far no check engine so hopefully I got the MAF clean enough for now

I am going to borrow a heat gun and try to get it back on the way it is supposed to be. but at least I know in the meantime I am safe to drive

and when I do I will get the MAF completely removed for a better clean and replace those screws that hold it in

on an unrelated note, I have had this intermittent squeal and I figured out where it is coming from: the muffler. So I will need to have that replaced soon. will search some threads for best options for that route
