Slipping Timing Belt?

So I was driving on the highway and my engine light turned on, and I began hearing what sounded like a very faint rattling sound from under the hood when i would accelerate. I immediately pulled off the freeway, and the engine shut off. It would start up again, but after driving a few blocks, the same thing would happen. Loss of power, rattling during acceleration, and stall. I ended up calling AAA to have it towed back home.

I'm thinking my timing belt's worn and loose. I'm nearing 160K miles and it's never been changed. Fact is, I have a mechanic who's a friend of the family that does all the major work on my truck, and he never accepts payment since we return favors to each other all the time. I'm fortunate to have such a cool mechanic on my side, but at the same time, since he offers the services for free, it kinda sucks sometimes because there's usually an underlying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it policy" Thus, the timing belt hasn't been changed.

I'm going to take it in next week, but just wondering if anyone can temporarily "diagnose" the problem.

THX!
