My 99 4runner had a leaky radiator and fluid got into the tranny. Had the radiator replaced and the tranny flushed 5 times. I found out about the leak because when I would stop (at a light or just to turn) it would slip into "neutral" and there would be a very large slam as the tranny would engage. Unfortunately, the repairs didn't help any. Honestly, I don't know if the leak was the cause of problem (with seals maybe damaged). But it sounds like other people have had this problem too without the radiator trouble. Any suggestions? The toyota dealer had no ideas, and the transmission specialist's tests all showed the tranny was tine.

In addition to the flushes, did they ever remove the trans pan and replace, or at the very least clean the filter? From my experience, when water gets into the trans, it tends to generate sludge which can clog up the filter. If it is in the trans for too long, it can also cause some of the internal trans parts to start to rust. You may also have a problem with one or more of the solenoid valves under the valve body.
