slow cranking over

2000 4Runner SR5, V6, auto trans, 107K miles

Do you guys experience slow cranking over on yours? Mine doesn't start up immediately like you would expect a Toyota to do
Takes 3 or 4 crank overs

I would expect a quick crank or 2 and it should start up.
even my 1970 Chevy truck usually cranks over on 1 click

I belive this is typical. My 4runner does the same, compared to an immediate turn over. I'm not sure if this has to do w/high mileage loss of compression,etc.

On a cold start does the outside temp have an effect on how fast it turns over?

I also noticed that my rpm's are at 1250 on startup according to the tach

Yep, my 2000 does the same thing w/ only 65K miles on it. I hate to say it, but it's kind of embarrassing to have to crank it that long before it finally fires. Toyota obviously has a strong reputation for reliablity, but my 1995 (178K mile) Honda Accord "Beater" daily driver fires up the INSTANT that i touch the key (even on the coldest 10-15 deg. mornings). Hell, even my 10 second 2000 Camaro SS (monster cam'd street/drag car) fires up quicker than the 4runner.

I've only had the 4runner for a few months, but it has a new battery, so I was wondering if I have a starter issue.

you might. i say this because i have 65400 miles on my 01 and it starts perfectly, even on the coldest of days.

if its a new battery, its either a flawed battery or starter problems.

I am assuming in my case its the starter cause it does it cold or hot.
I was thinking of maybe buying an Optima battery as I have no idea how old this battery is that came with the 4Runner.

I had this cranking over problem on another car and it kept getting worse and worse til we discovered a slowly dying battery

It even takes more than 3 or 4 cranks now sometimes - yah maybe I should check have that battery checked

im upgrading to an optima at some point soon. i have no issues with my current battery, but i know its old and id just like the security of having an optima.

Lee, very nice 4Runner - is the like the 2002 model I wanted to buy, but I didnt have that much cash.

Anyway, another thing is on a 1970 truck everything worked great except I had one of the fog lights that would never come on, but we verified light was all good.
I removed the (seemed good) Autozone battery and I installed a new Optima battery & that fog light always works now.

My 2000 takes a few cracks (about 6 of them) to fire the engine it's a tough thing to get used to. I guess I will look at having the starter checked to make sure it's in good working order.

BTW I have about 74K on the truck

I dont know that the starter would give such problems. a starter normally turns it over OR doesn't. The battery is a possiblity but if yours is working fine i wouldn't go buy a new one for giggles.
I have replaced my starter and battery w/in 4,xxxmiles and i still have the long crank time on my rig.

Just posted a similar problem, this thred kind of died off. Maybe I shouldn't worry until I have a prob, but I prefer to be proactive than reactive. Know what I mean.

Dude, it should NOT be doing that. I have a 97 and it cranks right up on the first hit. Mind you, it WAS doing that before I changed the starter out a few months ago. Bring it to your autoparts store, the diagnostic machine should tell them if the starter voltage is low or if you have drain somewhere in the system. if it doesn't crank the first time something is definitely wrong. BTW- i had to replace my starter at 164k miles.

I'm with jasonran. My '99 3.4 V6 with 110K has started almost instantly since new even in winter (except when the OEM Panasonic died after seven years. I replaced with an Optima RedTop and now it starts even faster.) If you can count the cranks, then I'm thinking your starter, connections or battery are iffy. I couldn't count cranks if I wanted to--it spins too fast and catches too quickly.
