Sluggish acceleration on 98 4Runner Limited

When I press the accelerator from a dead stop or while driving down the road it is very slow to accelerate until I hit approximately 40 MPH and then it seems to take off. Any suggestions on how I can improve th acceleration?

What RPM are you going to? Is this flat ground?

Worse going up hills but not much better on flat ground. Not sure on the RPM's I'll check. I bought this for my 16 yr old daughter and she just told me about it.

Some truck details would be nice too . V6 or 4 cyl ? Manual or automatic etc...

I agree with XJeepguy. We need some more details.

Even with the V6 the engine is still a little underpowered, in my opinion. We also have to remember this is a twelve year old vehicle.

From my experience it takes at least 2,400-2,800 RPM to get decent acceleration up hills.
