Small accident today

Involved in accident today about 2 blocks from work. Lady in a Ford Focus didn't stop, which pushed me into the car in front.

I almost think she hit me twice. First was the dent in the tailgate which then I got pushed forward, and then she wasn't fully stopped, so she hit me again.
The second would be where she nose dived under my rear. Don't see how one hit would cause the impact damage to the tailgate and yet still have her car end up underneath my rear end.

Tailgate has some damage, while front/rear Trail Valance piece; both bumpers are trashed.

I had made one payment on my '16 Trail when some dumbass girl who was texting while driving, in heavy stop and go traffic nonetheless, smashed into my car close to the same as yours.

Her car kinda went under mine, tore off the bumper cover a bit and bent the exhaust as well. The repair has been a real PITA. The OEM replacement bumper does not fit well and after 3 trips to the shop I complained to the insurance company to let me go to a different shop.

There was a post a few weeks ago saying there was some bumper issue and the cover was redesigned(?). I was going to talk with the new shop about this and see what the deal was. Best of luck getting yours repaired properly the first time.

That has to be frustrating.

I got the estimate from the body shop, was basically front /rear bumpers and rear hatch. No other parts, no mention of other potential damage.

My brother (auto claims manager at a different insurance company) wrote an estimate that was 10 times more detailed then the shops.

The shop lists after market front /rear valance pieces, then lists time to prep/paint them, and they are more expensive then OEM to start with. Believe the same way for the rear bumper, A/M again more expensive then OEM.

Sounds like you need to switch over to your brothers ins company. In all reality you have to sign off on the the repairs approving them before the shop performing them gets paid. Don't sign off until you are fully satisfied...

Judging by the photos of the damage on the Ford Focus that hit you and the angle of contact, it's very unlikely that any damage beyond cosmetic is present on your truck. The adjuster was doing her job as trained. Damage found after tear down can be supplemented. And since additional damage found by the repair shop is extra income for them they will point it out.

perfect opportunity to get the insurance company to buy you steel bumpers

That's what I did. If you can fix your rear tailgate on the cheep then you can get a nice steel bumper. It's how I got my SSO rear. I just pushed out the dents and covered it with a nice swing arm spare.

My only problem was that it took 10 months to get the SSO so I had to drive around with a cracked bumper cover for a bit. It was worth it.

Notice that big chrome bumper guard on the back of my truck.

I could barely see it. In fact, not sure that what I'm looking at is the guard. Went to your picture album to get a better look, couldn't see any guard at all in the tailgate-view pic. Can you provide a URL (or brand/model) for the guard?
Thx.

This is a good time ask this question. I have an aftermarket steel bumper. If someone rear ends me how will it play with out insurance? I'm assuming they would only do an OEM rear bumper replacement and not replace the steel bumper if it got damaged?

They will if you don't call and tell them about the bumper now.

My biggest fear with my (still newish?) 4Runner: some distracted joker plowing into me from behind. I leave my Smittybuilt BeaverStep mounted just for this reason. Not sure how much it will help, but I doubt it can hurt.

Glad you're OK, the truck can be fixed...

Also my fear. It's mind blowing how many distracted drivers are out there. I think i spend more time rotating my head between three mirrors, trying to predict a level of distraction from drivers, then actually enjoying my drive time.

I guess you'd have to talk to your agent and see if there are any potential issues with any mod: lifts, bumpers, etc.

Also, some foam to cover a hitch ball extension might help those shins. I knew a guy years ago that had front and rear bumpers each made from 4' of railroad rail. He pushed people a few times and got hit a couple of times and didn't have any damage. Kind of heavy though.

Some insurance policies exclude aftermarket parts. I would definitely check and make sure it's added/covered. If someone else is at fault they would have to pay to fix or replace with what was on it at the time of the loss regardless of oem or not.

Do you have your mods insured?
I do not have any mods that would need to be insured. But I am a licensed property/casualty agent. I recommend that if you make any substantial modifications to your vehicle that you tell your agent/carrier. Don't want any surprises on either your side or your carrier's side. And it may not even raise your rate at all.

That sucks, but glad no one was hurt. Just FYI, tell your adjuster to add a new spare rim and tire to the estimate. From the pic posted yours got Ford smacked and has a flat spot. Wouldn't trust it or the tire.

Got rear ended last month in my 18 4Runner, very minor for me, yes I have a ball mounted in receiver
Totaled her KIA. My kids say i’am a ACE now, fifth time I have been hit while stopped (not same 4Runner) each time with hitch installed
This time made for great video as I have front and rear cameras, her insurance was glad to pay when I sent them the video

I was in a McDonalds line with a hitch carrier. Very poor lighting at this McDonald’s/small clearance and this young fella with his 4 friends hit my carrier trying to go around. My carrier won lol. I was like idc if you don’t care and he seemed very appreciative lol.

Weird that you keep getting hit though.
