small spark from ignition

When I get the key to the ignition switch there is a little spark. What is causing this? It can't be good. I have had some problems with it starting in the past. It's an '86 with a new battery and alternator. The starting problem happens rarely and it has to be jump started when it occurs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You mean a little spark jumping from the key to the ign sw ?

If so, that's called static electricity.

It's winter, it's cold, humidity's low, static shocks/sparks are common.
