Smart Key?

I have been putting some looking and a little less thought into the premise of seeing if it's possible to hook our 4th gen 4runners up with a Smart Key -- the same system that the newer 4runners have. When I owned my Acura TL we were changing key fobs (the switch blade key style of the TL-s), installing window roll-up modules since the TL could un-roll the windows using the unlock button, installing auto-starts with the factory fob, etc.

There is a web site -- KP Technologies that sells the modules that detect pulses from the fob to roll the windows up for the Acura, as well as a push button start system.

What I'm getting at here, is there a way that we could integrate something more than just push button start -- such as the Smart Key? I would like the push button start, but I would much rather prefer the ability to unlock the vehicle by touching the door handle.

This would most likely be an expensive and time consuming mod, that for me wouldn't be worth the investment, but then again, what do you think this would entail?

I'm subscribing to this thread cause I like this and want it.

Another idea is our door handles are like the toyota avalons and as u know they have the smart key system so we could possibly change the door handles out with them if we can get the rest of the equipment.

I also haven't taken the time to read the link in the above post. I prob should do that.

Okay just followed the link... Idk I like the oem factory toyota key fobs. Does anybody know if like you can get this installed on a brand new vehicle at the dealership or does it have to come from the factory that way? If it can be dealer installed idk we cant mod it to install in our 4th Gens

Smart Entry systems were never an option for the 4th Generation 4Runner, theoretically you could install all the required components. The problem lies in registering the system to the vehicle properly, its been a while since I even played with the smart key systems on a Toyota for anything other than key registration. But you have to remember its also partially connected with the immobilizer and security systems and need to be properly set-up communication/software wise for it to work properly and I'm not sure if it would recognize the VIN/Vehicle's existing modules.

I don't have this system BTW, but it uses the oem toyota push start module and it had all the features I liked. Just seemed too complicated to do and you'd have to mess with with steering wheel lock.

Oh and when I say too complicated...I mean for me. Wiring scares me.

The option to get push button start is certainly and option that could be done relatively easily; however, if I was going to undertake that, I would really like to look into getting the door handles, oem fob, etc, to have the whole smart key benefits.

It looks interesting but I would be nervous tampering with that stuff. I will use the old fashioned remote and key.

I just installed a viper remote start and I used the Viper PKE add on module to have something similiar...

No, I don't have push-button start, but when I walk up to the truck she unlocks and when I walk away she locks.

I also have it set that if I go back and forth a few times it'll stay unlocked for 5 minutes before locking again.

It was a PITA installing myself... But I got it done.

I have two antennas... One in the front by the sunglasses holder and the other in the rear hatch.

I didn't want all the security BS, I just wanted a remote start and passive keyless entry.

I still have to put the key in and turn it, but I don't care.

It's really nice when you have your hands full and it just unlocks! Well worth the extra $79 for the PKE module on amazon...
