Smittybilt Trail Jack Mounting

Hey guys. I'm checking out the smittybilt trail jack because it costs less and is taller. Lots of guys are mounting them in the back using the D rings in the trunk with a 48 in Hi Lift. I was wondering how much excess space there is and if a 54'' jack would fit. I don't really know how they measure the height on the jacks whether it is max lifting height of overall height. Hoping I can mount it that same way other people are. Thanks for you help. Also any thoughts on the smittybilt trail jack would be appreciated.

You sure you need the taller one? I would just go with the 48". Taller isn't necessarily better and could be a hindrance. Aren't the taller ones 60"?

i like the taller ones personally, just because if you are off road chances are you might not always be on even level ground, so you could run into a spot where you have to place the jack in a "hole" and if you have some good flex on your rig, the short jack might not be enough to get the tire(s) off the ground, but thats just me, ive always been a more is better kinda guy -look at the lights on my truck. some people say that its overkill, i say im getting close to perfect but not quite there yet... :shrug:

in answer to the OP, i know that the short hi-lift jack will fit crossways, but i dont think there is enough room to fit a larger one in there, as it comes really close to the side panels with only a couple inches to spare but your best bet is to grab a tape mesure and go out and check it out

The 48" fits across the trunk with little room to spare. If you went with the 60" you would have to angle it. Why not get a small length of chain or metal twisted wire rope and use that to limit suspension travel when you need to?

Haha thanks for the input guys. The only real reason I was looking at the Smittybilt was because its cheaper and it has a wider base which are both bonuses. I guess if I cant think of a better way to mount the smitty then I'll get the hi lift just for ease of storage.

Colorado... I'd imagine that with shipping and everything I could just run down the street and buy a Hi lift

I bought a 48" Hi-Lift cast iron jack new for $54 last year (Orscheln Farm Supply). I doubt the Smitty is much less than that and Hi-Lift is the standard (and Smitty stuff is usually Chinese $XJ#).

Ya I'll probably end up going with the Hi lift. I doubt the the extra length will make much of a difference.
