Smoked out Tail Lights

Yea...that's all us cops have to do!! Eat donuts and screw with teen-aged drivers! Wow...that's the whole reason I became a cop...NOT!!! There's a reason why we want people to see your tail lights! Just like there's a reason we want to see your license plate...so we can read it to know who's vehicle it is, if its been used in a crime, or if its stolen. I had a friend get shot and killed last year cause he couldn't read the license plate...he stopped a vehicle for running a red light, come to find out they had just robbed a bank in the next town over...if the rear license plate had not been covered by a smoked color plate cover he would have known that...if he could have read it, he might still be here today, and his three kids might still have a dad.
Also...while your at school tomorrow, why don't you ask your English Comp teacher how to spell "lisence"....They may tell you it's spelled "license"...but what do I know...I'm just a fat cop that eats donuts and pull over teenagers all day because I don't have anything else to do!

It's not like his license plate wasn't visible. It was just a lid that was a light yellow, completely visible. He only put it on because his registration sticker was stolen the month before. The ticket was because it was supposedly tinted. When my house was being broken into, it took at least 15 minutes for the cops to come up to my house. I see a million cops on the streets just driving around. 3 days ago I see a cop put on his siren, speed up, pull into the Carl's jr and go through the drive through. Don't get me wrong. Appreciate that you risk your life to protect us, but in burbank when there's rarely any burglaries, all there is to do for a cop is eat and drive around. When there is a burglary, it's not even taken seriously.

Like I said...sorry for the rant. I'm truly sorry that officers in your town weren't there to help you and your family. I can not speak for them...but most of us picked this career to help people and their communities...not to get free donuts

Tail lights used to be a warning to allow other drivers on the road to know you are slowing down or coming to a stop. Now they are just another accessory to spray paint. You are putting everyone on the road at risk of being injured when you start playing with safety items. Its foolish to think its ok because "Everyone does it."
Your friend had the option to go with a clear cover, but he went with a stylish yellow one to probably match the color of his car. Then again, even the clear ones can be difficult to read at night when your headlights are shining on them.

I actually have to disagree with the majority of most people. I for one like tinted taillights when they are done right. The wrong way of doing them is just spraying them with nightshades. The right way is masking off the main area where the light is emitted. Then do two light coats of VHT Nightshades in the unmasked area with wet sanding in between. Once your happy with the shade, go ahead and unmask the area. Then apply one or two light coats of Nightshades again, once again with wetsanding in between. Let those cure for a couple of hours then spray on a few coats of clear coat. Once again dont forget to wetsand. After thats all said and done, simply polish them up and they will look nice and purty.

Stupid games, win stupid prizes? What the hell are you talking about? The plate lid is actually 100% visible, 150% visible when headlights are shining on it, are you kidding me? I'm not tinting my tail lights because everybody does it and I don't think it's okay because everybody does it. I'm doing it because I want to do it. That's the end of the story. You must be blind if you can't see the light behind a tinted tail light.
Don't want to go through that whole process. Sanding it then spraying it, nothing more nothing less. Thanks though, looks nice.

even being pulled over, still no flack for my painted tails, with night shade they dont reduce your tail light by very much. still perfectly bright. i have noticed a year later they are starting to fade. could use another coat.
for everyone giving you crap about not doing it. i dont think they realize how much light is still put out. go ahead and do it. i did 4 light coats on mine, be sure to be LIGHT coats. you can add but not take off.

You obviously have more time on the road than I and also a problem with police officers, and probably authority in general.
Here is a high contrast plate with CLEAR cover in the DAY light at an almost direct view.
Pretty legible, right? The police shouldnt have any issue reading that at night with different light sources glaring off of it.
I'm an engineer at an automotive lighting company. I have a pretty good idea what I'm talking about. What are your qualifications?

Not the same as tail lights but I completely blacked out my DRL's with night shades and as you can see the light still passes through
I wouldn't worry one bit about someone not being able to see your tail/brake lights. The real risk is driving during the day light and taking a risk of being pulled over by the police since it is illegal. But then again so are so many mods, even simply swapping out your factory muffler for a flow master is technically illegal.

Not trying to be a total **** here Russ, but your post doesn't exactly scream "grammatical perfection" either! With that being said, I agree with you about the importance of being able to see things during a traffic stop. The only thing you're thinking about is your safety, which is totally understandable.

Leave the kid be. If you're content driving your stock 4Runner that looks like everyone else's, carry on. Clearly he's not content with that.
Someone with your "qualifications" should have much more important things to do, rather than talk smack to a teenager.
