Snorkel for 4runner

Does anyone know who sells snorkels for the 4th gen 4runner? If they make one for the tacoma, would you be able to put it on the 4runner?

Nobody sells anything of this kind for the 4runner. Our fenders are significantly different from the tacoma so you're sol.

You can do a custom internal snorkel like the one I have. Fully furnished by parts from Home Depot. Just two 90 degree bends (narrow tight bend one) and approximately 3 foot x 3" round ABS plastic.

The end result looks like this:

All air is from the inside cabin which means you can submerge your vehicle beyond the door lines (not that I would even want to go there but technically you can). I would suspect all electrical would go out once you get water inside the cabin before hydrolocking it.

I have no problems w/ performance as it is sucking in the cabin air. You can tell when the engine roars as you can hear the air being sucked in. Pretty cool. Kinda of like a ghetto exhaust sound. :)

Lance - I know this is a dumb question but...

If you were running your a/c and the cabin was cold, would you possibly gain a few hp over the standard system (sucking in hot air during the summer)?
 
I've heard that someone used previous Tacoma snorkel and it worked. When I was talking to Tim from ARB, he suggest LC100 snorkel due to similar lines. On one of the Japanese forums I've also seen snorkel from new Hilux on 4th Gen.
I'm also interested in adding one...
 
My only beef with external snorkels are that it looks ugly... It just makes it stand out that much more than it already needs to.. But that's me. :)

another note... I live in the desert so water is an uncommon thing around here!

Opposite to me. If you take a look at the map, you'll see that Ontario, Canada is some sort of land with thousands lakes and rivers. I don't know any trails here without at least one mud-hole. My friend did his snorkel out of HomeDepot PVC pipes (it's outside, not inside as yours). That's looks ugly. I don't want to put plumbing 4" tubing outside of my truck; I want nice clean Safari or Airtec Snorkel...

Where you live I think you need more than a snorkel.. I think you need a floation device :) I've seen some photos of your vehicle in the water and I'm super impressed... Definitely not my cup of tea... I think the water + sand factor is what kills me (and I'm thinking cleaning up afterwards part..)

mud..... just doesn't work well for me... too messy! ;)

Floatation device is a good idea. Do you know how to modify 4Runner for this? ;)
The equation is simple:
MUD = few hours of fun + full day of washing out :)

What I need is some jet engine on my roof, so I can go through the mud without stucking. No need to spin the wheels
 
Just remember Good Times lots of these guys not only put on snorkels for water but also for dust. When traveling in a convoy of trucks the snorkel sits high and does not suck up as much dirt & dust. As for the PVC route, I have seen good and bad jobs, lots of guys are using the PVC and the ARB intake which looks good and filters out the rain water.

If you haven't got dust at the snorkel height, you ain't driving in much dust. With most of our desert driving, there is no way a snorkel is going to overcome a dust problem from a vehicle travelling in front. The dust cloud from the front will usually be 15-20ft high. You'd have to have a pretty darn high snorkel to overcome dust.

Snorkels are for water - period.
 
Snorkel actually helps in convoy driving, but it doesn't eliminate the problem, just helps a little bit. Mostly Snorkels are for water (Expat is right).

Are there any write-ups on how to do this? Seems like a good piece of mind mod.

No official write up but it does require you to cut a 3" hole in the fender to gain access to the inside cabin.

Outside of that it's pretty cut and dry.

Materials needed:
two 90 degree 3" narrow bends
3 feet of 3" abs piping
silicon (to glue the tubes together

tools:
gas heater to bend tube (takes awhile)
10mm sockets
cutting tools (any but a 3" dia circular saw would be ideal)

1. remove fender (passenger of course)
2. remove air filter to access bottom of the air filter access point that tunnels to the outside fender area.
3. wedge/attach 3" bend to the air box insert tube.
4. cut a 3" circle on the fender wall by the firewall. This circle should cut right up to the ecu on the inside so please caution when cutting.
5. measure out tubing and calculate bend required.
6. use heater to make the tube soft to bend it (this takes time... i.e. 15-30 min)
7. once the correct angle is produced, insert between the two 3" bends.
8. silicon it up like crazy to seal all open holes in the tubing and the holes to the fender.
9. reattach fender.
10. reinsert air filter
11. you're done
 
Nice, thanks. I don't have anything that I could cut through the fender with, though. What did you use? I have a heat gun that I suppose would work to bend the tubing. Any reason you used silicon and not black ABS cement?

Also, how is the in-cabin noise? My wife uses the 'runner and I don't think she'd approve of a huge sucking sound behind the glove box, or a bunch of engine noise coming in.

Silicon so I can cut it later on if I want to remove it :)

the noise inside is noticable w/ the v8 when under full throttle. It's not that bad during normal driving but once you give it a little umph it definitely makes a nice loud sucking sound.

if you've got an exhaust, the exhaust will drown out most of the sound.
 
With all this talk about snorkels, has anyone actually taken their 4th Gen in deep enough water to require a snorkel?

If so, how did the door seals hold up? When the water was above the door line, did it start to seep in or stay dry?

People with other vehicles (Thai): How did your door seals hold up? I'm thinking G500, Land Cruiser 80 and 100, 3rd Gen 4R, etc.
