We just purchased a new 2011 4Runner. We live in Southeastern KY and the terrain is very mountainous and hilly. When going down a steep grade (no guardrail and straight drops on either side of the road), and it is slick and snow covered, isn't it best to take the shifter out of drive and put into shift mode and downshift to a lower gear before starting over the hill? I am used to having a stick shift and owned a 4wd Chevy blazer that had the OD, D, 1, 2 gears and I would just shift down to 2nd gear and creep over the hill with ease. I have never owned the Drive/Shift shifter. I do need to take it out of Drive mode and put into Shift mode and downshift? Right?
