So i had a problem last night

As i got off the freeway and was making a right hand turn getting off of the off ramp i suddenly realized my power steering had gone. I looked down to see if i was in drive or i some how shifted on to neutral but i was still in drive, as i "merge" with on coming traffic i hit my emergency flashers and try to get to the side of the road. I notice I have no power, the throttle wouldnt respond and i look down and my engine is off, its not even at idle. as i finally get to the side of the road i notice my change oil light, change battery light, and my check engine light are all on and i still have no power. As i get to the side of the road i attempt to start up my engine and it catches, but then dies immediately, the only way it would stay on is if i had my foot on the accelerator to keep the rpm's up. Does this sound like alternator issue? Honestly i'm going to be upset if it is because I just had my alternator done about a year ago. But i cant really think of anything else that it could me. I got it towed to our mechanic (and yes he prefers mechanic opposed to technician. lol) but i dont think he's open on the weekends so i wont find out till monday what the problem is. grrr.

i had similar symptoms like you one night. but every time i hit the brakes, my truck would completely shut off. After i limped home, it started and never did it again. but when i would start it up, it would idle very low. over time, it just went away although i used to have to give it gas when starting up so it wouldn't idle low. check your IAC, its what i would check first.

I never had ther problem of the truck actually dying, but I have had p roblem where it starts but I have to keep the rpms up. Its almost like I control the idle with the pedal. And this is a problem when you drive a stick. Because I have had to hold the brakes down and keep the rpms up. With the same foot. I have no clue what this could be tho.

I had my engine die on me unexpectedly a few times.

It turns out it was my MAF sensor. It was all dirty from over-oiling the K&N air filter.

Maybe you can clean your maf sensor. Just buy some electrical contact cleaner from radioshack, take out the maf, and spray it it there. let it air dry- fan it to dry faster if you like. then reinstall. Worked wonders for me.

they have MAF cleaner at auto stores too. Its crazy but mine seemed to idle really light too. Like when i start it it sounds like it wold wanna die. I replaced the MAF, and battery and it seems to be a lot better but sometimes (very rarely) it stll runs really soft when i first sart it. Hopefully its nothing major!

taking of that intake was probobly the best thing i did. no more sarting issues ( knock on wood)

Similar thing happens to my sisters 3rd gen and its easily recreatable by just flooring it and revving up to 5k and if you just let it idle it will die dude to running the lines out of fuel. I think the fuel pump is on its way out. idk if this is happening to you. But same thing, have to have your foot on the gas a little to start it and then its fine. Once you drive around for a couple min its fine and will idle no problem. Just something to think about.

'scuse me!! toyota tech, coming through...'scuse me!! coming through

hahaha now that i made myself look like an *******............

Okay first thing I would do is pop out that Mass AirFlow Sensor (be careful, those ****ers are reallllly delicate) and spray the sensor element itself with a good amout of contact/circuit board cleaner. Afterwards, let it sit for about a minute or so, that stuff evaporates fast. Then drop her back in, and try and start it WITHOUT pressing on the gas pedal.
IF (which I highly doubt) that doesn't work, then we'll move on to IAC, could possibly even be the TRAC fuse blown, which is a whole other world cause then you wanna find out why it blew.
But start with the MAF, that'll fix ya right up.

Don't forget to check the intake pipe or tubing connecting that MAF to the throttle body, any leak between the two will give you the same issues. Fuel is another good thing to check, but you would need a fuel pressure gauge to tap in, so start w/ the rest.

The other thing i caught was your description of the oil pressure idiot light. This is NOT a change oil light, this is a shut it off before you blow it up because you have no oil pressure light!

o, i dont know if that would be any better or any worse having that come on or a oil pressure light coming on but thanks for the clarification.

i had it towed to my mechanic and he isnt there on the weekends so i'll give him a call tomorrow morning and give him the scoop on everything that happened and i'll let him know everything you guys are telling me. ecs the stuff about cleaning the MAF unit, i really hope that does it i'm really broke right now!

Cleaning MAF sensor

I think I have read on this forum several times to make sure you get MAF cleaner and not a generic cleaner. IIRC the MAF wires are really sensitive to the chemicals.

OK so my mechanic checked my MAF unit and its fine. He was probing around in there awhile longer and has come to the conclusion that its the actual idle contol unit that has given way. I dont really know how I managed to break it, i guess it is a 12 yr old car now, but its a fricken $400 whole in my pocket now getting it replaced and for labor. Does this sould right? He's ordered the part so my car wont be ready till tomorrow so there is time to spare if any of you chime in and think that price is too high or w/e. If thats what i end up paying there goes my entire tax retrun and then some. =/ my car musta knew that I was about to get some money in, greedy little guy wanted it all for himself, little did he know i was treating him to a new cherry bomb muffler this wed and finally get my amp and sub wired up. lol

ouch! ya i think thats what the OBD2 said what was wrong with mine when i had those problems. so far im still running the same idle control thing but man thats pricey! by the way from what i remember mine died too and the lights came on, check engine. VSC and one other. after it got scanned everything seemed to work/run fine. the lights turned off shortly after. hopefuly thats it for you man im curious to see what people have to say.
