After I removed the intake silencer, I looked up the tubing towards the motor and there is a thick, sticky substance almost like a realllllly heavy, old oil... any ideas? Is this bad?

That is strange. You need to see if there is something leaking or where that is coming from. I performed my ISR mod a few months ago and the job was "clean" and simple. No oil. I would check that out.

Are you running an "Oilable" filter such as the K&N or TruFlow? If so, maybe it was overoiled & that is creating the residue you see(?) Otherwise, I don't know where any oil could be coming from between the filter & throttle body.

clean your MAF now you see oil in there, and of course clean it up

yes, I am running a K&N (and I'm kicking myself in the ass for now going with Trueflow, as I've heard they're much better) and it very well may be the oil from that. I cleaned my MAF because the CEL came on indicating an O2 sensor error, but a quick google search turned up a dirty MAF as a possible cause, since the cleaning the light has stayed off... I'm hoping it was just too much oil, but i'll take a look at it from time to time, thanks for the help.

could be from the pcv valve or just from never cleaning it got any pics ?

I have seen some Jeep 4.0s that will coat the intake tubing and airbox with oil if they have a bad PCV valve. So that may be the culprit. Hit it up with some carb cleaner and check the PCV valve. Also may be too much oil in ur filter as mentioned above.

Hey so I know this post is old but today while doing the ISR mod, i noticed the same substance, coming out of the tube that connects to the intake tube closest to the throttle body... i followed the other end and it just heads the valve cover... i think its normal...
