That is my experience as well. Though I haven't crossed rivers, I have been driven through water/mud off road that submerged the truck up to the bottom of the frame on a few occasions. Each time I drained/checked the fluid and breather after, and there was no water intrusion. For peace of mind, if you do this often, considering the cost of synthetic dif fluid, it may be worth it to you to at least extend it. I plan to do it, but given my experience thus far, it's simply for my piece of mind.

Anytime I see a 4wd with damaged stock bumpers I have instant respect for the owners.. I really wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’d also take a Limited with an aftermarket locker over a trail/trd any day (and there’s plenty of threads discussing the differences), but that’s me.

I’d suggest a full-length fuel tank skid first, the Limited only has a half skid. I’d also look into bumper trimming as well, aftermarket bumpers are big commitment. If you get sliders, make sure to get the non-Limited specific sliders and update the rocker trim, for more clearance.

You’re right, do suspension, sliders, and other armor at the same time so you can get the springs matched to your estimated vehicle weight and desired ride height.

I think you're right, I think I need to find out more of what I want to do rather than just upgrade for what I have already experienced. The technical trails riding was fun however there were quite a few times I was riding down paths with jagged rocks and ditches that were roughly 2'-3' deep with a portion of my tire rolling in to that ditch while the other is hugging the edge of the trail trying not to hit trees lol. So while some of it was a blast and relaxing with good scenery... Some of it was absolutely stressful and I was worried about doing way more damage than a couple scuffs on the bumpers.

Ugh, so jelly... This just sounds so much more my speed.

I think I know where you are coming from.

I have also been exposed to that sort of off-road… and while it’s fun, adventurous, and challenging, , it can be extremely taxing and mistakes are costly.

I got into this stuff by riding with a friend who wheel very hard, and to be honest some of the stuff they do is more than I want to do myself with my own truck. While I did/do take my truck on those trips, it’s not something I wanted to really gear up for.

These days, I go out to camp, relax, and get out of the city. Adding trail repairs, physical labor, or costly repair tabs at the end of trips isn’t something that particularly interest me anymore.

I am equipped for leisure, hang out with friends, relaxing trail rides, cruising around the desert, snacks and drinks in the fridge… that’s not to say I don’t bang up the truck and earn my scars, I do use the thing, but I don’t necessarily go out looking for trouble either.

I have been modifying my 18 Limitied. Stuck with the XREAS for now as the off-roading will be limited to open dirt travels, otherwises mostly a daily driver.
Did the chrome delete, roof rack, wheels and tires for the appearance (for the time being).

It can be tricky and spendy to modify a Ltd since you would need to replace quite a lot of OEM parts with aftermarket parts. But the great thing though is that you would have a badass SUV with luxurious interior feature once it’s done.

Go to Bald Eagle State Forest and drive around some trails there. Going to the other offroad park near there (AOAA) would be a rather terrible idea due to rocks and pinstriping.

Do yourself a favor and buy a set of sliders. That's the first thing you should modify, along with tires.

For what it’s worth, 4x4Labs sliders replace the whole trim assembly, so you won’t have to purchase/install anything else. They’re more expensive than your standard tube slider though, so cost wise it won’t save you anything.

I’m pretty sure the Limited still has a better departure angle than any of the new Tacoma’s, just to put things in perspective. It’s the front that really needs help.

Hmm, I will check this out, thanks for the suggestion! Sliders are next up on the order list for sure.. I might order a set tonight lol.
Ditching the OEM 20s was literally the first thing I did after removing the steps lol... I couldn't imagine having those still as my Trail 17s are taking a decent beating.

I couldn't imagine having a factory height pickup with the longer wheelbase and longer rear overhang.. at least my rear bumper is getting cut in half for the Expedition One in a few months... putting my rear bed corner in to that hillside would have made me :barf:

at quick google image glance... Bald Eagle looks like a stroll in the park compared to some of the stuff we encountered at RCP as you described above.. jagged rocks trees hugging the trails. We'll definitely give this place a look very soon as it looks like there's some good hiking there as well. Plus its about an hour closer than the Central PA parks and a lot cheaper lol.
