...So, I'm thinking about this 2nd gen...

I have found a local 2nd gen, & I'm thinking about purchasing, but need some advice from those of you MUCH more knowledgeable than me! I met with the seller yesterday & this is the deal:

--1995 T4R 4WD Limited, 3.0L, (Hunter?) Green, Tan Leather Interior
--106K miles
--Power Everything (of course, since it's the Ltd.), and everything works (4WD, power windows, rear gate & window, sunroof, A/C--may need a recharge though, you get the picture)
--Body appears to be in great shape. No visible rust (It has been in GA). Looks like the R F fender may have been repainted (probably a fender bender), but the rest of the paint looks original
--Rear coils & shocks have been replaced, the coils are yellow and shocks are blue??? Not sure specifics, but I know it has NO SAG like it sits.
--Owner is in college & has only put like 1500 miles on it in the last year that he has owned it (he lives across the street from his school)

Now mechanically, from what I could tell...
--New idler arm, radiator, battery 1 year ago...new tires 2 weeks ago
--Underside of engine & tranny are coated pretty well with oil--moist on the oil pan, front drive shaft, and pretty soaked on the transmission. It dripped about 5 or 6 drops probably while I was looking @ it. Owner tells me he has put no more than 1/4 of a quart in the last year--1500 miles that he's had it
--Exhaust is original and seems to be leaking (manifold, maybe)

I don't claim to be an expert on mechanics, but I'm thinking it's all motor oil that has leaked down from pretty high on the engine (valve covers maybe) and leaked down the back side of the engine and onto the trans.

Now that I've shared most of what I found, what do you all think it's worth? Knowing that I will be responsible for the oil leak fix and whatever else it needs...

Thanks in advance to any solid advice! It is much appreciated...

By the way

Well, I guess I should also state what I'm looking to do with this thing. I'd like to make it my daily driver, as well as a weekend off-roader. It would be nice to take it in an "expedition build" direction, with a roof rack and a mild lift. Not looking to go extreme, I just don't want to start out upside down in the wrong Runner!

If anyone has any input, please chime in! I'm trying to make a decision pretty soon, so thanks.

Pics Added

Here are a couple of pics of what it looks like...

Is $3750.00 too much? Thanks in advance for input.

Maybe its a valve cover leaking. Price seems very reasonable espically with how clean it it. Theres no butt sag so that a plus. Get it I need a trail buddy in Newnan anyways ha.

I hope it's a valve cover issue & not more involved... The exterior & interior both look pretty good on this thing, but the undercarriage has me a little worried. I saw the pics of your "new" Runner. Very nice! Seems like all the good riding places near Newnan have been turned into subdivisons & apartment complexes. :( If I do end up getting this thing, we'll have to go find a place to try it out!

Thanks man and your right spots around here are scarce now. I have a buddy with another 3rd gen, one with a fj , and one getting a fourth in a few days so we'll be in good company for trips.

Ask to take it for a test drive & see how she does climbing hills. Mine is a real dog, barely maintains 40MPH on highway inclines. If it won't do the speed limit up hill you may want to pass.

I paid $3000 for mine.

Nodd, thanks for the info...a test drive would definitely be in order before getting very serious on this one! I'm not real excited about spending money for a vehicle that can't get out of its own way--it would be different if it got 30+ mpg or some other reason I could justify "super slowness".

I did a Carfax on it & it appears to have an odometer discrepancy from the 2003-2004 time period. The discrepancy comes from emissions inspection stations, where in 03 the mileage was recorded as 80k, then in 04 @ an emissions check it was recorded as 63k. I'm thinking the 80k was a keystroke error & should have been 60k. All the other mileages line up and appear to follow the timeline as they should. I really don't THINK it has been worn out...it looks pretty good.

Am I being naive about the odometer?
