So. ..my wheel split

On my way home from work today, I got off the highway and pulled down the exit ramp and started hearing grinding. Just as I turned off my radio, the front of my truck drops and the truck stops dead. I get out to see a flat tire, which I find peculiar, because flat tires don't grind. I start looking underneath and see the backing plate peeled back. Then I notice my rim is completely split in half! Stock 3rd Gen rims, has anybody ever seen or heard of this? I'm kinda spooked, just pulled off the highway from a 45 minute drive at approximately 70 mph! I think I'm going to invest in some steel wheels! Oh. ..by the way, anybody near Akron Ohio have a cheap set of steel wheels?

That's freaky man, definitely upload a pic when you have a chance. Haha, if you make it down to Wichita you can have my take off split 3 spokes.

Akron huh? Well I don't know about wheels but you should be able to get tires for cheap, right? How many tire manufacturers are there?
 
I have never heard of stock rims failing, ever. They are built very well, that's so odd. Glad you are ok and didn't happen at high speeds!

I'd replace with another rim, you can get them cheap or even free. You got a 1 in a million wheel that failed.
 
Maybe the PO banged it around...aluminium accumulates stress, unlike steel.

This happened on a friend of a friend's Nissan Titan. HOWEVER, they were cheap chinese aftermarket wheels, not OEM stuff. And, he was spinning his wheels like crazy on rocks trying to get out of a river crossing.

When I heard about it, I thought to myself how glad I am that I stuck with proven OEM Land Cruiser wheels, but to hear that this happened to a set of OEM toyota wheels is a bit unsettling, especially since it didn't even happen off road.
 
No, no modifications to the wheel. I should have pictures tomorrow to make this an interesting thread lol. I bought a set of Crager soft 8's and new of tires, I should get the truck back tomorrow after work so I'll upload either tomorrow or Saturday morning. I assume the po must have done something, all I've used it for is daily driver duty and some camping with LIGHT dirt/logging trails.
 
I've had one stock wheel with a similar failure. Complete split all the way around the barrel. However it was not a toyota rim. Was a volvo Volan titanium rim that was on a car we drove the heck out of.
 
So, as promised a split wheel!

I wouldn't think so, the truck has 110k miles. I, like past posters, assume there was a pretty solid hit at some point that caused a stress crack. Then with temp changes or just daily stress caused it to split.
 
I read this before the picture, but didn't really realize what you meant when you said split until I saw the picture. That's pretty scary...
 
Damn....I've seen this with Chinese aftermarket wheels, but never with a factory wheel!

Was that a "split 3 spoke" wheel?
