My last ride I used mobile one, I was wonder what everyone thought was best for the 4runner, I'm about due for my first oil change and was debating what to go with.

I just changed mine and used Royal Purple 5W/30. The engine seems to run more smooth. It is the first time I have used RP in anything I have ever owned. I will use it again.

Shell Rotella (non-synthetic), I buy it in 18.9L pails, which is almost enough for 3 oil changes on my truck (~7.5L/change).
For any of you Canuks on here, check out the Motomaster Formula 1 Synthetic at Canadian Tire, it's made by Shell as per the MSDS sheet, meets or exceeds GM's Corvette standards (Mobil1 is factory fill), and it goes on sale for 16.99/4.4L a couple times a year. When it does go on sale like that I buy a case.

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in the engine and Mobil 1 75W-90 in the T-case/Diffs.

I prefer Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30 full synthetic and have used it in quite a few vehicles. I am happy with it and its availability at Walmart for $2 less per quart than Royal Purple.
Although, after recently watching Royal Purple's video on why they are better, I might switch, but we will see.

I had always used Royal Purple in my previous few cars as they were high performance female attracting machines :nerd: My fist few oil changes in the 4r were mobil1 just because the advanced auto near me was running a "buy 4-5 quarts, get a filter free" special. I just switched back to RP last week. I love the stuff!! Oh, and btw, I run 10w30 in the warmer months and 5w in the cooler

I'm in the same boat as Ian, been using Mobil1 since 1993. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I used RP in my M3 and highly modified A4, but for the 4Runner I am sure Mobil is justttt fine. The owner of my local dealership has a 1999 4Runner he bought with 7 miles and he's used the OE Dinosaur oil since new. He's still running it with no problems at 180k miles.
Granted he has done ALL recommended maint, oil changes every 3,500 like clock work, etc etc.
For those of you wondering why the owner of a dealership drives a 1999 4Runner, he also has a TT Supra, multiple restored FJ40's (on the showroom floor right now), and he CLAIMS to have a 2000GT. I won't believe the GT until I see it though. I have seen his wife in a handful of Lexus' over the years.

Mobil 1 10W-30 HM. Great oil for a cheap price. Also have used Castrol Syntec 0w-30.
With this engine, one could use ArcoGraphite oil from the 70s and 80s and be fine with it.
Motomaster is a good oil; I wish we could get it here in the states.

You know, not to be a negative Nancy, but there are many threads of EXACTLY this topic, what oil do you use and which is the best... and they are probably one of the most worthless topics outside of "what lift should I get?"
Do your own research on motor oil and decide what you are comfortable with. Lots of guys here will give you different opinions about brands, non-manufacturer-recommended viscosities, etc. You will hear advantages and disadvantages to each one. The reality is that random people on the internet (including Bob is the oil guy, dealer mechanics, etc.) will give you contradictory opinions.
There are so many factors affecting motor oil, that you can't satisfy all of them with one oil (i.e. there is no single BEST oil out there), and that's why you need to make the decision for yourself. But to be honest, the safest thing you can do is just follow the manufacturer recommendation, cause like it or not, the guys that spec'd the oil in the first place probably know way more about these specific engines than anyone here. That said, the engine will probably tolerate lots of other types/viscosities as well. You could use non-optimal oil, and you would never know it wasn't the best, cause the engine can handle it well enough.
Dino OE viscosity oil changed regularly/properly will let your engine last forever, or at least something else will kill it long before the oil does, so don't stress about which oil you use. Just be sure you are changing regularly.

Lucas in the trans and tcase. Whatever synthetic is on sale in the engine. Usually Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec. I think its Pennzoil in there now.

I've run M1 in all my engines (including my very modded and raced '93 Eclipse GXS) for over 20 years and never have had an issue so why change now. I run 5w40 in the engine and Redline in the tranny and diffs.
My 4Runner only sees around 4000 miles a year but still gets changed by it's 11th month but I used to run it to 8-9k miles with no worries but I always change it at least once a year as I figure time is just important of a measure to consider.
