So what is the best hitch for our 3rd gen?

Mine came with a tubular style hitch that bends down a bit and has rusted to hell. I don't like how it hangs down so I'm looking for a better hitch that's flush with the bumper.

What's out there that sits flush?

They're all pretty much china stuff nowadays. All the big names were bought out and became one big company called Horizon Global. I have an original(as in like, it says it was proudly manufactured in Elkhart Indiana) Reese hitch that my dad got in 1996 at the Toyota dealer. It sits nice and close compared to the OEM Toyota hitch.

If I had to buy a new one I would buy the new chinese Reese. It's tubular and sits pretty close. If you want an old school Reese like I have then you can search junkyards in the Southeast and it should be dirt cheap used assuming the guys at the wrecking yard can buzz it off with an impact.

For myself I got one of the reese hitches that just about everyone uses and Instead of mounting to the frame where they said to, I put it further back and made new holes so that when you dont have a ball on to hook-up it is bearly visable if not at all.

Original OEM with bolts, then flip it upside down and cut hole in bumper for it to go through

Then you'll need a new bumper, unless you're just wanting it to sit right below the bumper, then just get the OEM square at a JY

Is there an OEM round tube hitch? The hitch I have is like that but round tube and sits the exact same way. I can't figure out what type of hitch it is.

That is what I am looking for, a hitch that sits closer to the bumper and is welded directly on the front of the tube instead of underneath. I will probably get this one.

I have a CURT hitch that I've had for a couple of years now and I'm quite pleased with it. I think they are made in USA. Definitely not flush with the bumper, but that's fine with me.

Please allow me to threadjack for a second. When I did my frame swap, I just left the round-tube type hitch that was on the new frame. It was in good shape, and no reason to fight those bolts.

My issue is that it does not have the little mount for the trailer plug that the OEM square tube hitch has. So I just left it hanging.

Can someone please tell me (or show me) what the roundtube hitch setup is for the trailer plug?

PS. I have a OEM square tube hitch like Mauzer's for sale off the old frame, but I won't ship it. You have to come get it. No hardware. Rust is not bad.

Mine does not have a trailer plug mount either. The PO used a hose clamp and clamped it on the round tube. It worked I guess.

Mine doesn't have a wiring mount, but you can just purchase one and install with some self-tappers onto the hitch.

Curt actually has a nice one that mounts around the receiver, No self-tappers required.
