I know one of you is the Jeep spy here....who is it????

I feel like every time I see a commercial for the new Jeep GC they are picking up on stuff we are picking on the 5th for on this forum, kind of makes me laugh.

1st was the watertight drive train thing because of all the breather talk lately (which we really do not know how theirs really is yet).....now I saw a commercial for them 'bragging' about their full 5 piece thick steel skid plates (which was a complaint I had with my 4R when I bought it, wish they would offer it as an option for us not TE people). I also remember seeing a commercial for another aspect that felt like they were picking on the 4R for, which was also mentioned on here a lot as well.

I do wonder why I have NEVER seen a commercial for the 4R and why EVERY night that I watch TV I see a commercial for the Jeep GC?

I am just waiting to see them make a commercial about how the GC is better because it has an internal AM/FM antenna next

On another note, parked next to 2 4th 4R's today, both times I came out the guys were circling mine and said they were impressed by the looks of it, and how it was nice to have a side by side (of course I do it on purpose when I see one with a spot next to it, haha).

That's because Toyota is selling vehicles and Jeep/Chrysler is struggling. If the new GC doesn't do well Jeep is in real trouble.

I've owned several Jeeps. The latest was my wife's Commander. It was horrible. It was a gas hog, had poorly designed interior space planning and had a lot of mechanical and body related problems (like weather stripping on the doors falling off and transmission problems).

Jeep has always had good bones...but missed the mark on the details.

The 4runner has the secret sauce.

I'm not a spy but the GC is way nicer then my 4Runner. If it weren't for owning a dog and needing a roll down back window I'd have bought the new 2011 GC without hestitation.

Jeep finally hit the spot with this one............don't believe me, go look for yourself. Inside and out it screams luxurious, off-road capable machine.

I like my 4Runner, but hands down the GC is a far superior SUV for the money.

I agree with you that "Jeep" always have nice design, attractive appearance, the problem with them is no soles just bodies, they can't stay on driving but rather to sit in the service garages, thats why Mercedes get rid of them after lost billions of dollar, for me i would not even touch them with a stick.

the gc is a step up for jeep but i question the quality. my coworker has one, a week after picking it up the plastic behind the passenger chair fell off. he got the first gc sold by that dealership in late july or early august. msrp was $45k with about every feature possibly, dealer sold it to him for $38k, they have faith in their product lol

I bet you won't find that going on at the award winning Tahara plant where they are building 4Runners.


I did look at the 2010 GC before buying my 2011 4R Limited - but I find that I simply don't trust the reliability or build quality of the Jeep at this point. Also, I am not a fan of the whole uni-body thing. I hope the new GC is a success as more compettition is good for everyone.

I like the way the new GC looks but it lacks that speical something that the 5th gen T4R possess. It is luxurious and I'm sure the off road capabilites are impressive; after all it is a Jeep, right?
I owned a '99 GC. At 5k miles, the front bearings went out. I made 5 trips to the dealer until they finally admitted that alot of the '99 GCs had bad bearings. The other 4 times, they just rotated my tires and sent me on my way. I was young and naive, and I didn't know anything about the CA lemon law. It also developed electrical problems that the dealer just shrugged off; they said that they "could not duplicate" (CND) the problem; sounds like some aircraft mechanic Short story..... I ended up selling it at 10k miles; I wanted to get rid of this bad apple before it turned into a really rotten apple. I've been keeping an eye on the GC for many years now. Sad to say, their reliability hasn't improved. Enough said!

I actually wish the 4runner was more utilitarian. I'm not one for luxury. If i wanted that I'd buy a lexus or a luxury SUV.

I almost bought a wrangler, but didnt like the way they drove as much at the t4r.

The 2011 GC looks like a CUV. It could have frog-hopping off-road capabilities, but I'd still request a 4Runner body on mine.

I agree with all of you on reliability............Toyota wins hands down. Having said that, I hardly keep a vehicle past 3-4 yrs so that's not a factor for me since I get rid of my vehicles when the warranty expires. This is my 4th Toyota, and I've had 3 Jeep's (all wranglers) as well (still own a 79 CJ5).

Not to derail this conversation but I'm actually considering trading my 08 runner in and can afford a Land Rover LR4. I hate that the gas mileage sucks but it is awesome at being a balance of on road amenities and comfort with off-road prowess.

I am considering the Jeep GC Overland also and the 4runner is in the mix too but I don't like the lack of KDSS on the limited, which is what I would consider. The 4runner looks like $hit to me too...everything inside is cheap, thin doors and I hate that Toyota cut stuff from the 4th gen instead of adding to it like most every other car company in the world.

The jeep rear cargo seems the smallest of them all and the cons for both Jeep and LR is reliability. That said, I have been checking True Delta for the past month and the LR has actually been pretty good so far but it's a small sample up to this point so more data is needed.

I'm still debating and may just end up waiting for the 4runner refresh in 2013 so they can add back HIDs, a better front and if lucky, put the GX460 v8 as an option.

I just rented a 2011 GC in atlanta for a week on business and at first I liked it alot. The steering wheel controls are much better than the 4r.... But after a week I realized that was it. I'm 6'0 and had a bit of a hard time getting in and out of the GC, the acceleration was a bit lame and overall the car felt cheap. I've got 15k on my 2010 4r and love it. I know the V8 GC would have more acceleration than the V6 GC I rented but the latest car and driver shows the V8 GC has almost identical accleration times as the V6 4r.

Overall Jeep has a good looking suv but it failed to satisfy. I don't regret buying my 4r one second after driving the GC.

I actually have to agree. She had to have it for some reason. I tried to get her into a 4th gen at the time. But, something about the Jeep grabbed her attention.

The other weird thing about the Commander was the body seemed snapped together. The entire front clip was overly flexible. When I washed it, I could move the bumper, quarter panels and flares with my hand.

Anyway...no argument about the looks. It was a Jeep styling exercise with limited capabilities. It was cramped inside, especially in the rear. The 4runner is worlds better.

I guess you are referring to "adding back" projector lights as the 4runner has never had HID lights. And as far as reliability goes I can only speak from my own experience with a 3rd gen 4runner which never had a problem, a 4th gen which the only problem was a rear passenger door locking mechanism fixed for $400 and was the only problem throughout her 180,000 miles and counting. As for my 1998 v8 GC Limited that thing was a nightmare from wobbly/terrible handling once it hit 80,000 and glad I never had to depend on the 4x4 because half of the time you couldn't even get it too engage, but to each his own as I have owned the past three generations of 4runners and they have been the best cars I have ever seen especially in terms of wear/tear and reliability.

You don't need a commerical when the dealer's can't keep them in stock. They are flying off the lot at my local Toyota dealer. I've been by there a few times for service, owner lunch and just to ask a few questions. I rarely see one in stock, and when I do, it's being prepped for delivery. lol. Toyota hit the mark well on this 5th gen, they don't need any commercials.
