So ya failed your SMOG check? (California Residents)

Really quick info here peeps. Now I'm no mechanic, but I just had to do some quick fixies because I failed my smog check. (barely passing on all parts)

After doing some searching I found out that failing a SMOG could be fixed by doing something as easy as changing spark plugs, or as difficult as replacing your CAT. (not the one that meows)

Luckily for me all I had to do was replace the 02 sensor and I passed with flying colors.

Moral of the story: find a mechanic you trust (luckily I do) have him run a diagnostic check on your engine and start with the small things 1st.


(all info is personal opinion from recent experience, there are very knowledgable people here that can also offer different options.)

One thing to remember as well. If you have failed smog and need repairs, only a licensed smog shop can do the repairs legally. If you go into a regular shop and WITHOUT telling them you failed, ask them to perform the needed repairs, they can do it since they dont have knowledge of the failure. If you tell them you failed smog and need repairs, they can't legally do it and most wont touch it if they arnt a licensed smog shop

Good to know! Install K&N FIPK2 and vortex muffler shouldn't affect my smog check right?

The muffler wont be a problem and as long as you have your CARB sticker the FIPK comes with under the hood, you should be just fine

also in CA, if you do find out that you need a new CAT, you can go to a certified shop that is licensed in this work, and you can actually get a government check to help pay the cost because it is emission related

Only if the cost of repairs excedes a certain amount. I think there is a complete checklist on the Bureau of Automotive repair's website

true, but some shops actually help you out and do what they can to get this for you. they still make money, and its helping everyone out

Yes thats true. Good shops will try and help you out. Any shop who doesnt want to help you out is probably not one you want to use

FWIW, I have a 20 year old PU I keep around for hauling stuff. I drive it maybe a hundred miles per year. It recently failed and failed badly for the first time. Cause? Old gas. Fresh gas fixed me right up.

(Full disclosure: I also changed the oil)
