Lost Cause
I too have been loking for a soft top for my `88 Runner. There are 2 companies that produce soft tops, Can-Back and STC (formally know as Kayline). Can back tops are very expensive and mount quite nicely, except on the tail gate. A glue strip is used to hold three snaps. It looks good when the top is on, but very cheesey looking when the top is off. STC is cheaper but requires drilling many holes in the body and tail gate. You probably saw this one on thejeeps.com. Tropical tops used to make a neat bikini top for 4Runner`s but is now out of business. Another company built about 40 really cool tops for Runners but they too have been out of business for years. The rear window was fully operational! I think they were from Texas. I`ve also heard that you could buy them from Toyota USA, but it has probably been discontinued and was never available where here where I live, In Canada. Many first generation 4Runner owners are looking for clean installed soft tops at a reasonable price. Hopefully one will come up soon. If you really want one I would look into a custom top or find an old top and cut it up to use as a frame. Hope I helped you out. If anyone has heard about another soft top please reply!
