Up for sale is a single-original-owner, well-documented, well-cared-for example of a Gen3 4Runner. It has been my commuter vehicle and has never been “off-road”! It now has ~270,000 miles and is as reliable as ever. It has been garaged its entire life, has never been involved in any wrecks and has never had any paint work done. All electric windows, keyless remotes, gauges, cruise control and HVAC controls work. The AC blows as cold as it did when new and it has the best heater of any car I own. It has leather seats & door panels, fog lights, luggage rack, factory tow hitch, rear cargo matt, rear cargo cover, hood protector and rear wind deflector. It exhibits no oil leaks that spot up my garage floor. It has NEW tires, fairly fresh front rotors, good brakes all around, a fresh brake/clutch fluid flush, refinished wheel center caps and brand new OEM floor mats. I have the original window sticker, all the books and manuals that came with it, all keys and keyless remotes and the 1999 Toyota 4Runner marketing/sales binder that shows all the colors, options, etc.
I have the clean title in hand and have had it since I bought it, even though CarFax starts showing a Lien Reported in 2011... Who would even offer a loan on a 12-year old car to the original owner who already had the title in hand?!?! I'll send the CarFax to anyone who wants to see it.
I have a detailed maintenance log spreadsheet that I’m happy to send to anyone who is interested but basically, my maintenance schedule was:
Oil and Filter Changes: Always Castrol GTX about every 2500 miles for the first 10,000 miles, then every 3000 miles until 140,000, then every 4000-5000 miles since then.
Slick-50: Added at 2k, 95k, 265k
Transmission, Front and Rear Differential and Transfer Case Oil Changes: 50k, 133k, 209k
Timing Belt, Drive Belts, Water Pump: 75k, 170k
Spark Plugs: 30k, 60k, 91k, 119k, 156k, 187k (Platinum), 265k (Platinum)
Air Filter: 30k, 50k, 66k, 84k, 105k, 126k, 156k, 187k, 215k, 245k
Front Brake Pads: 120k (they were only half worn)
Rear Brake Shoes: NEVER, and they still look new
Front Brake Rotors: 235k
Brake and Clutch Fluid Flush: 185k, 269k
PCV Valve: 105k, 156k
Fuel Injector Cleaner: 180k, 265k
New Drive Shaft: 225k (because I never greased the UV joint)
Valve Cover Gaskets: 230k
New Tires: 50k, 103k, 178k, 263k
New Battery: 173k, 231k
New/Clean MAF: 82k, 255k
New Power Antenna Mast: 260k
Clutch: NEVER
Everything else is original
Lower Ball Joints: Mine was not subject to the recall because it was built in Japan (Factory code = 1) and those LBJs weren’t affected by the recall.
VIN = JT3HN86RXX0223315
What it could use for a cosmetic refresh:
1. A new windshield, although the current one has been that way for three years, passes inspection and doesn’t leak. $230 at Safelite
2. Driver’s leather seat recovered
What it could use for a mechanical refresh:
1. Timing Belt, Drive Belts, Water Pump: Last done almost 100k ago
2. 4WD Relay of some sort: The 4WD works fine, but to get it into 4WD, you put the transfer case gear shift in 4WD like usual and then go under the hood and switch the Frond Diff vacuum lines. So, there is some switch or relay somewhere that isn’t working right.
Update:
Today, Sunday, Dec 3, 2017, I removed the aftermarket stereo components and reinstalled the never-used OEM stereo, amp and speakers. So, it is back to 100% stock, but with a "brand-new" 1999 stereo system in it that works perfectly. $500 price drop as a result.
The Price:
I know this is a highly sought-after generation of 4Runner and the 5-speed/4WD/V6 combo is extremely rare. Mine is in remarkable condition for being in service for over 18 years.. I’ve seen what the others are going for on cars.com and elsewhere, so I’ll collect a few offers and let it go to the best one.
Thanks for looking.
