Sold my 2015 Limited

Its truly been a pleasure being on this forum but yesterday I traded off my wife's Limited for a 2017 loaded up Grand Cherekee Limited. She was tired of the harsh ride (especially on concrete roads) and we don't go off road more than just dirt. Also we wanted the blind spot monitor, emergency self braking, radar cruise and lane departure warning. The 4 Runner is an amazing car but needs serious updating in safety and technology and we didn't want to wait on a pipe dream of a makeover to our liking someday down the road. The trade I got was incredible. 5 grand off the Jeep and $35,500 for my car. I only paid 40k for it in 15. I know all the bad Jeep stories but my sister has a 15 Grand Cherokee with 50,000 miles and has had 0 problems.

Believe me I tried real hard to get her into the new 17 Highlander which is a sweet car but she has this it looks like a mini van syndrome. We drove everything including the overpriced euro trash and she picked the Jeep. Its all good. She's a keeper not like the 4 Runner. I still have my LS460 and that's the baddest boy on the block.

I left the Toyota family some years ago and bought a brand new grand cherokee..........NEVER AGAIN!

It was in the shop 41 non consecutive days after I hit 18k miles.
*2 Transmissions
*4 Fuel Sending Units (would just come to a slow stop on the freeway)
*2 Radios
*2 Rear Axles
*2 Front Tans-axles
*Rear Windshield wiper quit

Even the Service Manager knew I had a huge piece of crap!

Finally did a lemon law on it myself. The dealership kept calling me asking me to stop, they'd give me a new one........

When I finally got the arbitration meeting, the judge looked at the Chrysler rep and said "41 days in the shop, do you think that seems excessive?"

Chrysler rep says "yes we do"

Case closed.

Took the money I got back and bought my first 3rd gen 4Runner and drove it for 268k, not a single issue (other than regular maintenance)
Sold it for $6400 and bought a second one.

My personal theory about Chrysler vs Toyota:
Out of every 10 Toyota's you will have a solid 7 that are going to be relatively worry free, not perfect but close
Compared to:
Out of very 10 Chrysler's you "might" get 4 that will be worry free....maybe and personally I feel that's being generous

I know unreal. Now 1.5 yrs later and 24,000 miles moved to the Jeep losing $4,500 this time. Still pretty good. The Jeep is a V6 300 HP and loaded up to 49k sticker. The reliability of the Jeeps has gotten way better, a couple people I know and in my family have 2015s and up with no problems. Better to get my money out of the 4 runner sooner than later for the highest trade value since we knew it was not for us. The Highlander would have been a better pick but no go on her part.

Take a mental note of the Toyota depreciation if you trade your Grand Cherokee in after two years/25k miles. I know someone who traded in a loaded Overland, 2015 w/18k miles for $33k. Lost $15k pretty quick. :ybrick:

No, if anything, the quality has gotten worse. ChJeep does not seem to care because there are suckers born every minute that will still buy them. The thing I do not understand is why anyone would buy a new cherokee, especially after they see how well a 4runner holds its value, but to each his own. Outside of the Wrangler, Jeep resale is horrible.

All 2018 Toyota models will have all the features you want, will hold their value, and stay on the road for many miles.

Hi Kenny – We just bought a new 4Runner Trail, but seriously considered a new Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. As far as amenities, general comfort and ride, the Trailhawk seemed much nicer to me and my wife. What swayed us to the 4Runner, however, is our off-road usage in trips to the mountains, which is where it really shines. And I was a little leery of the Trailhawk’s air suspension. I really didn’t think the overall reliability of the CG would be a problem, though. For what it’s worth, our 1998 Grand Cherokee (bought new) has been very reliable over the years, currently has 180,000 miles on it, and still runs like a champ. I haven’t been able to bring myself to let it go yet. Granted, the new GC’s are a completely different animal than our 1998, but I remember the 1998’s being panned for their reliability at the time.

I see that you’re a retired Volvo dealership mechanic. In 1984, I bought a new Volvo 242 GLT. At the time, Volvo’s were known for being nearly bulletproof and very reliable. Mine turned out to be the most unreliable car I’d ever owned, and I got rid of it after 50,000 miles. If you’d worked at Monarch Volvo (now McDonald), you probably would have seen it, since it seemed to be in their shop more than my garage. Luck of the draw, I guess.

It is great that you looked around and found something that meets your needs.

I am sort of opposite, I do not like all the gizmos like blind spot monitoring and radar cruise. That is one of the things that attracted me to the 4runner.

Haha, this sounds familiar. We traded the 2012 in on a Grand Cherokee because my wife wanted more features and full time 4WD. We barely kept it a year. In fact, I paid $3K cash to get rid of it because she did not like that it felt like a car and had some Jeep/Chrysler... quirks. She really missed the 4Runner after that, which is how we ended up with the Limited.

Good luck OP - hope it works out. I will say the Jeep forums are a pretty good crowd as well.

If you do come back to a 4R, don't expect the same financial gift you got on the way out. You got good money for your 4R for a reason, which you'll eventually figure out.

And you may have been premature: Toyota is pushing to ensure all its vehicles, including the 4R, have its latest Safety Sense, which includes lane departure warning, radar cruise, pre-collision detection, auto highbeams etc in ALL its vehicles this year. Don't be surprised to see these in fall for the 2018 model year, possibly with other updates.

Sometimes thing just don't workout and if your wife is happy that is all that matters.

I personally love the style of the Jeep Cheerokie and would love the SRT8 as I think it's one of the baddest looking sport utilities on the road.

It's just to bad you couldn't convince her to buy the SRT8 now that would have been fun.

Kennyr44 - hopefully your wife got a good Jeep and you kept a good lady happy...for years to come.

But the new Jeep GC, will cost more overall:
Used-Depreciation is just as big a factor of "cost of vehicle ownership" (years later), as the "out the door new price".
- many Big3 (Ford/GM/Chrysler) vehicles loose 70% of their MRSP, after 4 short years
- conversely, Top Japan models typically take 8 years to get down to 30% of list price
A new Toyota Highlander or Lexus RX350 would have been good substitutes, for a rougher riding/full frame 4Runner.

I have a friend that buys a new & fully loaded mini van, every 4 years.
- several years ago, his new Chrysler Town & Country had 23 warranty jobs, in 4 years
- from trans failure, over-heating, to window regulator electrical failures
- next new Chrysler Town & Country overheated with failed head gasket, with only 23 miles logged on new vehicle
- owner decided to not call a tow truck, and destroy POS engine driving mini-van back to dealership parking lot
- through a loop hole, his money transfer payment was delayed & cancelled
- so he went out and bought a new Toyota, costing $11,000 more
He finally bought into the Toyota brand, and never looked back !!
