Wow, we could have traded. Tomorrow, I hand over the keys to the 2011 barn scorching 5 passenger wagon that pins you against the seat from the on ramp all the way past 110 mph with two gears left...and averages over 40 mpg (Over 600 spirited miles on just 14 gallons)....for a 4Runner.
We decided that we don't need two cars and the VW would have been fine for that if we lived somewhere boring. In Colorado, if you don't get off the road, you aren't having much fun.

Wait a sec... if you're talking about performance (aka badass) none of them are getting 42, maybe 30ish and that's being optimistic.

The new generation VW TDI cars are the only roomy 5 passenger production cars that are a blast to drive and get mpg averages nearing 50. Clean turbo diesel is where it's at. Torque, torque, torque...sip, sip, sip.

Hate to say it but the clean turbo diesel is not all that fun to drive. Punch it at 70mph to get past a tractor trailer and you'll pass him at a snails pace. I drove an Audi A3 TDi (same motor) and it was absolutely gutless. Great mpg or not they are slugs.

This is wrong regarding the current 6spd VW TDI Wagon. I've owned around 50 cars including many full fledged sports cars and the roll up from a steady 70-75 is good in 6th gear and very good in 5th. I've put 14,000 miles on the car and if it weren't very good at getting out of the way on the highway, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. Everyone that's ridden in my car over the last year has been impressed with its power, including some pals that are PCA club regulars.

I know Falcon and that's certainly better than Pueblo West...you won't be taking that Golf over the Medano though...

I drove a 2010 Audi A3 TDI for over a month while my POS 07 A4 was in the shop and was less than impressed with its ability on the interstate. 140 hp @ 4200 RPM 236 lb-ft. @ 1750-2500 is not what I call very speedy and am not sure how this matches up with your "full fledged sports cars".... Were they Honda Civics?

Very true. also i would love to see a vw out wheel my 4runner, or any other stock 4R. they may have torque but lack ground clearance even with the very impressive air bag suspension...lol yeah right. hit the trail with it and let me know how far you get.

Hmmmm, 4 years racing SCCA including one trip to the nationals driving Porsches. 35 years of being a sports car guy owning several costing more than twice the price of a new 4R. Is it as fast as my old RS America? Did I say it was? The impartial folks a Motor Week think the TDI Wagen is a star in its class and a fun car to drive. I say it's the most fun you can have hauling 5 and getting better than 40 mpg.
No, I didn't drive a likely automatic A3 TDI dealership loaner but my 6spd 2011 TDI wagon went from a steady 75mph to 100 in about the time it takes to say "went from a steady 75mph to 100" and that's up here in the Vail Valley where the air is thin. I'd say something was wrong with the car you were driving, if they are in fact on equal. Either way, I've spent enough time on this subject. Enjoy.

ooops excuse me the elantra gets 40ish mpg
the genisis coupe gets 30 on a 2.0 turbocharged engine but pusts out 210 hp and 224 tq. not bad. id still take that over the golf.

Motor Trend might think that because its one of the only diesels in its class? Always a thought.
FYI "a likely automatic A3 TDI dealership loaner" has a DSG transmission which is FASTER than your TDI Wagon 6spd. It shifts faster then any human could possible think of shifting. So again, not sure how it hits 75 to 100 in the time it takes you to say that. I too have spent enough time on this topic. Have fun with your speedy 140hp VW, maybe you and a Prius could take it to the track to see who's faster and who used the least amount of fuel at the end of the run.
Oh, one more thing. Once your VW breaks, which it wont take long, maybe you can get a T4R owner to tow it back to a money pit, aka VW Dealer.

really? thats a god dam lie. please show us proof of this. whoopdy doo, it can lift itself 2 inches. then you have to drop it back down therefore bigger tires wont fit on it because the system prob requires it to be stock height going over certain speeds. pretty surer its awd too with no control of having it in awd or 2wd, the system has to feel a slip....
sorry i said to stop argueing but this can not be stated without gettin torn apart

thats true about the offroad is true! but i have a 2005 suzuki dl650 vstrom (red/black is mine) and a 2000 honda xr650r.

my touareg tdi actually has more clearance then a stock 4r and is about the same if u get a 3/2 (in the 4r). and the vw in my opinion has MUCH more power and is MUCH better offraod then the 4r. it is smaller and shorter so it is better offraod and got to places my 4runner couldn't get to without finding another route.
