Some advice needed on possible purchase

Hi All,
It's been a long while since I last posted and that's when I had a 96 4Runner. Well long story short, I'm back in the market for another one and wanted to get some feedback on this one.

It's a 2002 4x4 SR5 auto with 117K miles. It's had 2 owners and has a clean Carfax. One concern I have is that it's spent most of it's life in PA so am a little concerned about rust. Web pics look OK but you know how that goes. Dealers asking $9753.

It looks like it was really well maintained. 117k is relatively low mileage and the rear bumper looks nice and clean. That spot always seemed to be a good indicator of rust, not sure if that holds true for the newer 3rd gens though. The engine bay and underneath will tell the real history of it so some pics of that would be more helpful.

Wish I had engine and underneath pics but these were from the dealer's web page. And I agree, 117K for a Toyota is low mileage. One thing I do like is that it has a tow package. If I move forward on it, I'm thinking about offering $9K. It's end of year and I'd think that dealer's are itching to move inventory :biggrin2:

I sold my '00 SR5 with 152k miles in mint condition to a friend in need for $5400 last January. I'd offer the dealer $8300 and work up to $8900 if you have to. It'll make you seem willing to compromise.

I offered the dealer $8500. They came back and said quote: "we can't alter the prices on the car/trucks they are one price and have already been discounted." So I went to their web page the other day, and they've reduced the price after telling me that they can't. Like tell me one thing and do something else? WUWT?

The tow hitch looks 2 clean. Possibly painted to hide EVIL RUST. :sniper:
If they wont work the price down i would look else where.

Did you actually go to the dealer and check everything out when you made the offer? It just sounds like a line you would get while dealing over the phone, which I don't expect would be taken seriously

If you plan to buy it outright, I have found that if you bring cash to the dealership they are more than willing to deal.

BTW that is a Reese hitch, its not factory, when i bought mine that is what came on it from the previous owner. The Reese Hitch you posted was either repainted or it was stripped of all its stickers.

Actually, I think that is a fair price. $7,500 is a pipe dream. Your right about rust being a concern. My 2001 4Runner has rust on the inside of the chrome bumpers, but not much anywhere else. Of course looking at the car will tell you a lot. One other concern, my guess is that the timing belt that should of been changed at 90,000 miles was not changed. If it hadn't been changed, I would mention that to the dealer and you have to adjust accordingly in price.

I think it looks like a great vehicle and my guess is, if it is in great shape, they won't go down much.

I know that's it not factory so it's not that big of a deal with me. Any problems with the one on your 4Runner?

No problems, but ive never used it, but mine is rusting. I have the factory one too and am debating on which one to sandblast and spray paint.
