Some help with Shocks!

Hello, I currently have bilstein 5100's on hand and have been waiting to do the LC Coil lift. However, I do not have the coils yet and I have blown my rear shocks. Can I throw in the bilstein shocks without the LC coils or will they not work. I understand I have to change the eye outlets but Im hoping I can just throw these on for time being. Any ideas?

Can you post the part number? Which 5100's are they? They could be too long for the factory springs and you could certainly be at risk of bottoming out and damaging them with factory springs in there.

x2 on this. Rather than risking damage to your new shocks, try finding some used shocks to get you by. Or buy some from Autozone and use them. Wrap the sh*t out of them with masking tape while you have them on your 4runner. When you get you new springs, take the shocks off, peel off the tape, and return them to Autozone. I've done this before, and I've had no problems returning them.

Looks like those have a collapsed length of 13.84". That's actually about an inch more compression that I would have thought they would have. I still wouldn't risk it. Maybe someone else that has run the setup and can chime in. Maybe try pulling one of the stock shocks and comparing the compressed lengths between the two? Does anyone know the compressed length of the factory shocks?
 
Looks like those have a collapsed length of 13.84". That's actually about an inch more compression that I would have thought they would have. I still wouldn't risk it. I should have mentioned that I do have coil spacers on right now so Im not straight stock. However I was able to get them on and they so far have worked compared to my blown shocks. My buddy who helps me owns a mechanic shop and he told me they would work so I went with it.
 
The size shock you can fit is a matter of the length from the top mount to the axle mount at full stuff, which is then a function of the bump stops length. The length of the coil doesn't effect if you'll bottom the shock out (unless the collapsed coil is super long, which is bad too).

Flex it out or remove the stock coils and measure how long a shock you can stuff in there at full bump. I run the Tundra 5100s in the back no problem, but I honestly can't say if they bottom out or it's the bump stop hitting whenever the truck drops into a hole or the rear end bottoms.

If you put a longer shock in there with stock coils, it isn't going to compress as much as the stock length shock. Your stock bump stops would essentially be worthless (unless you modify them) and your new shocks would become the bump stops. Not a good situation to be in. Unless you change or modify the bump stops the length of the spring greatly effects if the shock bottoms out. The spring is what determines the ride height. If you have taller springs your ride height is obviously higher up and your shocks have more distance to travel before they bottom out. That way you wouldn't be risking having them bottom out driving down the road or over speed bumps.

Why wouldn't it compress to the bump stop if you hit a big bump? Yes, you would need more force to compress it to the bump stop, but that doesn't mean you can't--again, unless the compressed coil is long enough in which case the coil is just being smashed as all the rings ram into each other.
 
When I had stock springs and did some heavy towing I would lift my truck put some wood blocks under the bump stop cones in the coils so I wouldn't sag. Some people may think i'm idiotic for doing this but it worked great for me. That might be an idea for you...

I think what he is getting at is with a longer shock you could bottom it out before your bump stops come into play. I may be reading what he is saying wrong though.

100% Correct. Thank you for clarifying. That is exactly what I'm trying to say. You can bottom out the shock before you hit the bump stops just going over a speed bump.

Because the shocks bottom out before you even get a chance to hit the bump stops. Without modifying the bump stops the shocks would in a sense be your bump stops.

Okay yes, I completely agree. I thought you were saying the bump stop wouldn't matter if you had long coils (ignoring the length of the shock). My bad on confusing everything :rapture:
