Some Maintenance Questions '06

I was fortunate enough to be able to get the maintenance report from Toyota for my 06, which had one owner before I bought it almost a year ago.

I noticed the rear dif fluid was changed at 92,000 km (I'm now at 120k) but the front dif fluid has never been changed. I've read a fair bit on here about the importance of the rear dif fluid being changed every so often, but couldn't find much about the front. Is it a good idea, or waste of $$?

Also, at 92,000 the description of the work is "FRT CALIPER/A-MARKET" which I assume means the front caliper went, which (I've read here) is not completely unusual. I want a bit more detail on some of these fixes, does anyone know if there is a way to find what the operation codes mean? Is there an online source or anything? Each piece of work on the report only has a BRIEF description (like one just says STEERING).

Any help is greatly appreciated! This site has made me spend lots of $$, but it's always been a great source of info!

I can't comment on the 'operation codes', but maybe a trip to your local dealer's service dept. would help.

As for the front diff fluid... change it. I just changed front, rear, and transfer case to synthetic at 67k miles. The transfer case oil was pretty clear and looked almost new (which I've heard is common), but the oil in the two diffs was a lot darker/dirtier. For me, it was just good piece of mind.

Thanks for the reply! Transfer case doesn't seem to have been done either, so maybe I'll get them to do that as well.

Front diff oil was dirtiest when I changed my rear, trans and front fluids at 40,000 miles. Yours @ 120,000 is way overdue.

Yeah, change it before it breaks. I could imagine how many suv's out there on the road ready to break.

Was your 4Runner serviced at a Toyota dealership throughout its life? Was it serviced regularly and on schedule? According to the Maintenance schedule, the front & rear diff and transfer case fluids should have been changed at 64000km's with the transmission fluid changed at 96K.

How hard was it to get the full maintenance schedule from the dealer? I ask because I want to get mine from my dealer. It was serviced regularly and I went there and they printed it out and we reviewed it quickly and it was regularly maintained on schedule (was a lease so likely had to be) but they did not over me the copy (and I didn't ask for it), but now that I have bought it, I want to get the copies of all maintenance for my records.

I know I looked at some other reports when looking at other 4Runners and often saw some vague descriptions that didn't tell you much about what was actually done.

I bought an '05 with 115k and the service manager at the dealership printed out the full service history. Preface yourself by telling them you're thinking of having them service it but need to know what's been done.

As far as I know all the maintenance was done at Toyota, but some of the descriptions are a bit vague. It did specifically say the rear dif oil had been changed though. I'm at 120 000 km, so I just asked them to go ahead and do front dif and transfer case because even if it was done its probably overdue anyway.

The dealer I bought the truck from would not give me the history because they said it was confidential, but they suggested going directly to the dealer that had done the maintenance. Fortunately that dealer is right on my way to work. When I indicated I would be using them for all my future service needs they printed the history for me, but basically said "if anyone asks you didn't get this here".

Kind of a funny follow up to this. I left my work # with the dealer and told them to call me if they came across anything. I got a message from the mechanic and thought "uh oh". After playing phone tag for a while I finally got in touch with him and he says "you know you have to do your rear dif as well". I explained it had been done not too long ago and he says, "Oh, well I went ahead and did it, but I guess we won't be charging you for it":lmao:

Well I went an visited my dealer today and they print out the entire maintenance history for me, as well as teh two latest services undertaken at a different Toyota dealership (though these two are a bit less descriptive).

I got it at lunch today and have not yet had a chance to look at the reports in complete detail, but I looked at it previously quickly as well. Nice to have the records for my files.

find model year and just do the 5k mile/6 mo. Once there you can click print all intervals and it'll bring up a PDF of the maintenance schedule.

When I got my truck i had my brother replace all fluids in the whole truck and it was well worth the peace of mind.
