Q: Is it possible to get a ticket for using this laptop thing? Heard it's not legal in CA. What about other states?

thats really cool, my buddy was making one for his jetta.

its not illegal because cops have them. i just dont think you can be playing movies or stuff, same rules as a tv in your dash, navi is ok though.

now you need one of those mini printers. Ive seen those work many times in cop cars . . . .

Did you have to drill holes on the passenger side floor?

No, I didn't. The mount is fixed under the two screws of the passenger's seat. So I did have to borrow a power screwdriver from a repair shop.

it doesn't, havent you ever sat in a cop car? its a little aukward but doesnt touch your legs.

So far my passengers didn't complain about the leg room, and yes it is quicker to remove than to install.

The problems I am having is that sometimes there is still a little freedom of movement on the laptop when the truck is going through some non-trival bump, and i found that even it is deadly attached to the passenger seat, the rack still moves because of the weight of the laptop on the other tip of the pole. This might be a potential threat to the laptop hard drive.

Also, I need to pose the laptop carefully to leave enough space for the gear and not too close to the wheel. There is no vertical height adjustment to this mount.

Thats a cool setup, i have the same program for my laptop but not the fancy stand. My laptop just sits on the passanger seat and i use the gps tracker to make maps of all the off-road trails/expeditions i go on. works really well for that.

That's the setup I'm looking for. I run Streets and Trips as well. In my truck my laptop would fit right on the center console but the 4Runner's is a bit smaller. I'm in the mountains on rough access roads/logging trails about 90% of the time with my job. Think that mount will be sturdy enough to withstand bouncing around with the weight of a laptop on it? It's between 6 and 8 lbs I would guess.
